History
William and Mary McDougall were pioneers and longtime residents of Vaughan Township. Born in Scotland, Mary Loynachan (1813-1913) married William McDougall (1812-1889) at an early age. In 1836, William came to Canada, and Mary followed in 1838. The couple started working for the Pease and Davis families on Yonge Street, Toronto. Shortly after, they rented the Mulholland farm on the fifth concession of Vaughan Township and William worked as a blacksmith. Upon the death of her husband in 1889, Mary McDougall moved to Edgeley with her five unmarried children and resided there until her death in 1913. William and Mary McDougall had fourteen children, although only seven survived beyond infancy: William, Donald, Samuel, Silas, Margaret, Caroline, and Eliza Jane. The first five remained unmarried. Caroline married into the Garrett family. Eliza Jane married Michael S. Burkholder, and they had a daughter, Mary (Mrs. George H. Scott). Michael Burkholder worked as a teacher, a cabinet and coffin maker, and an undertaker. His daughter, Mary, did her teacher training at the Toronto Model School and then, after her marriage, taught at Emery Public School in Weston, Ontario. Eliza Jane and Michael resided in Woodbridge, Ont. until her death in 1947.
