        History

        The Matthews Wells Company was established in 1931. The founders of the company included James Matthews, Arthur Wells, Jim Dunlop and Howard Matthews. The company produced jams and was well known for their Rose Brand of pickles. The Company occupied the former Dominion Linens plant on Victorian Road, but expanded to a Twelve acres site by the 1960s. The floor area of the plant also increased during this time to about 80, 000 square feet. The company started with 12 employees, and by 1962, it employed about 160 people. In 1959 the company became a part of the Nabisco Food Division of Nabisco Ltd and was later purchased by Robin Hood Flour Mills Ltd in July 1968. In October of that year the plant was closed.
