The Reverend Alexander Malcolm (Sandy) Nicholson (1900-1991) was a United Church Minister and Saskatchewan cabinet minister who helped found the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (now the New Democratic Party) and introduced the first government-sponsored medical insurance plan in Canada.
Nicholson was born in Lucknow, Bruce County. After marrying Marian Massey in 1928 and completing his education at the University of Saskatchewan, he became a United Church minister, first in Edinburgh and then northern Saskatchewan. Nicholson became involved in the fledgling C.C.F. (Co-operative Commonwealth Federation) as an organiser and, later, National Treasurer. He was elected as a federal Member of Parliament for the northern Saskatchewan riding of Mackenzie in 1940 and served four terms until 1957. During this time, he also started one of the first co- operative farms in Saskatchewan. Between 1960 and 1967, Nicholson represented Saskatoon as a member of the Saskatchewan Legislature. As Minister of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, he introduced a bill in 1962 implementing Canada's first medical insurance plan. In addition, he was actively involved in the John Howard Society, the Association for the Mentally Retarded, CUSO and the United Nations Association. After retirement, Nicholson conducted oral history interviews and gave them to the Saskatchewan and Ontario archives. Nicholson and his wife, Marian, had three children, Ruth, Mary Anna, and Alexander.

This fonds consists of the records Alexander Malcolm (Sandy) Nicholson and document his activities as a politician, social activist and oral historian. Included is correspondence relating to his involvement with the CCF, the Quan family, and personal matters. Fonds also includes newspaper clippings of articles written by Nicholson or about his career. Also included is a Nicholson personal photo album containing ca. 80 photographs, created 1920-1978. In addition, fonds contains audio reels, audio cassettes and transcripts of oral history interviews conducted by Nicholson, between 1968-1981.
