    Biographical history

Libby Scheier was a writer, editor, social activist, critic, and university instructor. She was born on May 31, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. She taught Creative Writing, Canadian Literature, and Women's Studies courses for York University from 1988-1994. Scheier's education includes a B.A. (1968) from Sarah Lawrence College in Philosophy and French, and an M.A. (1971) in English, from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Scheier moved to Toronto in 1975 after living in France, California, and Israel. She has one son, Jacob. Politically active since her university days, Scheier was involved with the Sparticas Youth League and with the Trotskyist League of Canada, from which she was expelled in 1977. Remaining a social activist, she has been involved in the Canadian Abortion Rights Action League, the Cross-Cultural Communication Centre, the Writer's Union of Canada on the Writers Union Rights and Freedoms Committee and the National Committee, the Feminist Caucus of the League of Canadian poets, and the Ontario representative to Women and Words. In addition to editing the political journals of organizations with which she was associated, she spent a year as a part-time editor in Israel (1974), served as copy editor for several science journals, and was contributing editor to several publications. Libby Scheier died in 2000.
