Biographical history
Laura McLelland was born in 1916 and died in 2009. She was raised in West Garafraxa, and for a time, lived in Elora before moving to Guelph where she lived at 8 Durham St. Laura McLelland worked at Colonial Dresses on Dublin St until it closed. She also worked briefly in Toronto, but returned to Guelph to work with Raven Knit on Fountain St. While she lived on Durham Street she rented the top floor of her home to nurses and university students. Laura McLelland also organized a nurse’s reunion and a reunion for employees of Colonial Dresses. Laura McLelland had an interest in local history. She never married.
Custodial history
These records were held by Laura McLelland until her death in 2009. Later that year her estate donated these records to the Guelph Public Library Archives.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of photographs and textual records created and or accumulated by Laura McLelland documenting her interests in local history. Included are photographs of graduates from the Guelph General Hospital School of Nursing participating in graduation ceremonies and social events. Other photographs are of a parade in downtown Guelph, a train wreck in Galt, Ontario, and employees of Colonial Dresses Limited. The bulk of the textual records consist of newspaper clippings relating to graduates of the Guelph General Hospital School of Nursing. Included is a program for graduating exercises and brief notes related to the history of Colonial Dresses limited.
