    Administrative history

While it is certain that medicines were in use at Kingston General Hospital from its inception, the first Pharmacopoeia of the General Hospital, Kingston, was published in 1926 when the first full-time pharmacist may have been engaged. Changes in pharmaceutical practice at KGH reflect the changing nature of the profession as well as the expansion of the pharmaceutical industry. In 1958, the Pharmacy Department reports that 'the trend in dispensing becomes more highly specialized every year and requires more careful scrutiny of all the products offered.' Recognizing the significant role of chemotherapy in patient care and the multiplicity of drugs being marketed, in 1962, the Board of Directors of the Ontario Hospital Association recommended the development of a Formulary Service for the hospitals of Ontario. Accordingly, KGH published a new formulary in 1962. By 1963, the KGH Pharmacy hired an additional pharmacist in order to begin implementation of a long range plan for a modified 'unit dispensing' system for the Hospital. By 1981, the unit dose system had been established hospital-wide. Extending the department's educational role, the Hospital Residency Program started on June 1, 1980 with two residents, a program in cooperation with the University of Toronto which continues to the present. Today in 2007, under Director John McBride, Pharmacy Services provides pharmaceutical services at Kingston General Hospital, Hotel Dieu Hospital and at the Cancer Centre for Southeastern Ontario. There are 22 pharmacists, 36 pharmacy technicians, and two residents. With clerical support and management, Pharmacy Services employs close to 70 individuals.

    Custodial history

An inventory of the active and inactive records of the Pharmacy Services department took place in 2006 and a transfer of inactive archival records to the KGH Archive was made.
