Administrative history
Originally known as the Medical Board, the Medical Staff began in 1894 as a group of physicians, who had previously relied on individual effort, wanting a stronger voice in decisions regarding such matters as hospital expenditures. In 1903, the Medical Board changed it's name to Medical Staff and at least 2 members sat on the Management Committee from this point forward with the President of the Medical Staff always being a member. Since their inception, the Medical Staff has also been particularly concerned with issues relating to patient care, medical procedures, staff appointments, accreditation and medical education. In 1942, the Medical Conference Committee – renamed the Medical Advisory Committee in 1959 – was created as a standing committee of the Medical Staff. Initially, this committee's major focus was education but in time evolved into the primary point of contact between the Medical Staff and the Hospital's Chief Executive Officer and Board of Governors on matters of concern to the Medical Staff.
