Kingston General Hospital is a teaching hospital. Its clinical departments report directly to the hospital Chief of Staff and the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Queen's University. As the Department of Pathology at Kingston General Hospital developed during the early years of the twentieth century, its administrative, patient care and teaching functions gradually formed a complex departmental structure. In 1999, the Department consisted of the Department Head, Deputy Head and four divisions directed by a Chief of Services. The divisions consisted of: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Chemistry, Laboratory Hematopathology, Laboratory Genetics and Microbiology. The Department Head also served as Medical Director for the Division of Clinical Laboratory Services and the Deputy Head also served as Clinical Director for the Outreach Program. An Administrative Director and a Medical Director administer the division of Clinical Laboratory Services. Committees carry out much of the administrative and operational work of the Department. Departmental committees may have members from Kingston General Hospital, Queen's University and Hotel Dieu Hospital. In particular, the Joint Management Committee has members from Kingston General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital that examine issues such as laboratory rationalization, lab safety and cross-consultation. There is also an End Users Committee, Continuing Education Committee, Safety Committee as well as a Quality Assurance Committee, which coordinates the goals of the Department of Pathology and it's division with those of the Hospital. In 1949, the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons approved the Hospitals' plans to create an intern training program in Pathology. Three years later, following the Royal College's approval the formal integration of teaching activities between Kingston General Hospital occurred within the field of Pathology. The Department of Pathology offers instruction to medical students at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. In addition, the Department offers instruction to Laboratory Medical Technologists, Rehabilitation Therapy students, fourth-year Arts & Sciences and Nursing students from Queen's University.
