    Administrative history

The Women's Aid began in 1905 with a small membership of twenty women who met on a monthly basis to discuss the provision of supplies to the Kingston General Hospital and it's patients. By the end of the first year membership had quickly risen to include one hundred and ten members under the leadership of Mrs. J. C. Connell, the first convenor. The Women's Aid became involved in many facets of hospital life. In addition to a wide variety of fund-raising activities, the group started a Scholarship and Bursary for Nurses in 1956 and established the Memorial Fund as a way to continue supporting hospital services. In 1961, the group set up a system whereby donations could be made to the hospital in the name of a deceased patient. Gift Shop, Coffee Shop and Hairdressing were a few of the services established to make hospital visits more enjoyable for patients while also raising funds in support of various hospital needs. These services continue to this day. In 1988, the Women's Aid Society went through a significant transition. Forsaking tradition, the members voted to change their name to the Kingston General Hospital Auxiliary in order that men could participate in the group.
