Administrative history
Kelly and Porter was a law firm in Simcoe, Ontario between 1894 and 1935, and was founded by William Edward Kelly (1866-1951) and Jonathan Porter (d. 1952).
Custodial history
The records in this fonds were acquired from the Norfolk County Court House at Simcoe as routine transfers from the Ministry of the Attorney-General, in 1971, 1973, 1974, and 1976. These were originally accessioned as Court Records, and the private records were later segregated as this fonds.
Scope and content
Fonds consists primarily of various records of the law firm Kelly and Porter, but also includes some personal records of the Kelly and Porter families. Law firm records contain incoming correspondence, and outgoing correspondence blotter-copy letterbooks and carbon copies. Also included are client case files, relating mostly to local Division Court cases, Ontario Supreme Court cases, and settlements of estates in Surrogate Court. These files are arranged in alphabetical order. Records of the firm also include clients' real estate records (containing deeds, mortgages, and related records), clients' legal records (including contracts, agreements, insurance policies, and other related records), and records regarding the management of the office (consisting mostly of financial records, particularly cancelled cheques). Family and personal records include family histories, a diary, scrapbooks, correspondence, two copies of an unidentified portrait photograph, income tax records, and records relating to various community organizations, including: the Canadian Lacrosse Association, the County Law Library Association, the Catholic Mutual Benefit Association, the County Crown Attorney's Association, the Ontario Minimum Wage Board, the Simcoe Liberal Executive, the Simcoe Public Library, the Norfolk County Council, and the Norfolk Masonic Lodge.
