History
Kanados Lietuvių Bendruomenės (KLB) Toronto Apylinkė (Lithuanian Canadian Community Toronto Chapter) is the regional chapter of the Lithuanian Canadian Community (LCC) for Toronto and Mississauga. The Apylinkės Laikinasis Organizacinis Komitetas or ALOK (Provisional Chapter Organizing Committee) in the Toronto region was formed 1950-1-29 and it oversaw the election of the first chapter executive (apylinkės valdyba) on 1953-1-3. The Toronto chapter of the LCC has been one of the largest and most active LCC chapters since its founding in 1952. Due to its size, the Toronto chapter has a regional council (apylinkės taryba), whose elected individual members and representatives of Lithuanian organizations active in the Toronto region elect the chapter’s executive. Since its formation, the Toronto chapter has organized and hosted numerous and various events for both Toronto’s, Canada’s and the world’s Lithuanians. Of the first 36 Kanados Lietuvių Dienos (Lithuanian Canadian Days) held from 1953 to 2009, the Toronto chapter has hosted 10 (1954, 1960, 1966, 1968, 1973, 1981, 1985, 1996, 2005 and 2009). Toronto has hosted the Pasaulio Lietuvių Bendruomenės (PLB) Seimas (Lithuanian World Community Congress) three times (1963, 1978 and 1988) and was home to the first PLB executive (valdyba) from 1958 to 1963.
