9.9 m of textual documents. The collection contains 49 bound hardcover volumes of the Northern Times, one for 1976, the others from 1983 to 2009. Since 2010, the newspapers are kept in archival boxes.

Administrative history

The Northern Times, Kapuskasing’s weekly newspaper, was founded by René and Olga Piché, in March 1961. On its silver anniversary in 1986, the Northern Times was "the largest communication media operating exclusively in the area". Sold in 1998, the weekly is now part of the Sun Media Corporation, a division of Québécor Media. The Northern Times is also responsible for the publication of a weekly called The Weekender.

The collection consists of a series of the Northern Times newspaper, for 1976 and from 1983 to 2018. Some issues are missing.

Immediate source of acquisition

The collection, a donation from the Bibliothèque Maurice-Saulnier of the Université de Hearst, was acquired in 2013. Since then, the issues of the newspaper are donated to Le Centre d’archives de la Grande Zone argileuse, on a regular basis.
