    Custodial history

    Scope and content

Fonds consists of a microfilmed five volume diary of Joseph H. Wooley. He began writing the diary in 1861 at the age of 17 and continued, with interruptions, at least until 1898. As well as the day to day chores of farm operation (such as farm repairs, breaking horses, threshing, and chopping wood), the diary records his personal, religious and recreational activities in some detail. The names of people he knew and had business with are mentioned, as are unusual events, such as the visit of a circus. Sections of each volume were reserved for the recording of farm and household expenses and the particulars of financial dealings with other members of the community. A portion of volume 2 contains arithmetical and penmanship exercises. A portion of volume l has been transcribed, and this transcript has been microfilmed before volume 1.
