Historia biográfica
John Wimburn Laurie (1835-1912) was born in England and educated at Harrow and Sandhurst. In 1863, he married Frances Collins, daughter of Enos Collins of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Laurie had entered the British Army in 1853, being gazetted an ensign in the 2nd (The Queen's Royal) Regiment of Foot. Appointed lieutenant and later captain in the 4th (The King's Own) Regiment of Foot, he served in the Crimea and in India. Laurie originally came to Canada as a major on special service in 1861, serving first as Inspecting Field Officer of Militia in Nova Scotia and later Deputy Adjutant-General of Militia in Nova Scotia until 1881. He served during the Fenian raids of 1866 and 1870, and in 1885 was second-in-command of the North West Field Force. He retired from the army in 1887 with the rank of lieutenant-general to devote himself to his political, agricultural and other interests. He represented Shelbourne, Nova Scotia, as a Conservative in the House of Commons from 1887 until 1891. He later returned to England and sat in the British House of Commons as member for Pembroke, 1895-1906.
