Biographical history

John Roué served in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) as a radar officer during and after the Second World War. Roué was born in Halifax, NS in September 1916. He was part of the Canadian Officers’ Training Corps prior to Second World War and enlisted in the RCN on 30 December 1940. He attended A/S (Asdic Control) School and was stationed in St. John’, NFLD from 1941 to 1945. Roué worked whit Radio Direction-Finding (RDF) and made some trips to sea as Radar Officer with convoy escort ships beginning in 1943. Roué continued to serve in the RCN after the Second World War and passed some time in Halifax, as Chief Radio Engendering Officer.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of a transcript of a talk given to members of the Canada Nautical Research Society which examined the history of the various ships that have used the name Canada and an interview with, Mack Lynch on Roué’s life and experience in the Royal Canadian Navy. Also includes correspondence and an article named “A Real Navy for Canada?”, published in the 1940 March issue of The Navy.
