John Francis Dunn (1926-) served with the United States Navy during the Second World War. He joined the United States Navy at the age of seventeen and served as a signalman aboard the S.S. John A. Quitman during the winter of 1944-1945, which was part of Convoy RA 64 to Russia. After the war he worked for the New York Telephone Co. in the Bronx area for 35 years. Around 1990 he started his own company, JFD Promotions. He is a member of the Ellis Island Restoration Commission and helped to found the Public Service Awards in 1976. He has also become involved with the Charlestown Historical Society in Rhode Island.

Fond consists of photocopies of personal recollections of John Francis Dunn, newspaper articles, photographs, and various documents relating to the Allied Convoys that were a part of the Naval Service Operations in the Arctic Waters from 1941 to 1945, especially the winter of 1944-1945. There are newspaper articles and pertinent information relating to Allied ships that were sunk during there operations. There are also documents pertaining to the German U-boats that were in the area at this time, lists of specific submarines and their activities. Some information relating to the invasion of Normandy is also included, such as the signals used and the actions of the United States Coast Guards in this operation. Also included is some information concerning Dunn’s activities with the public service of New York City and some personal paraphernalia.
