Biographical history
John Campbell, Sr. was born in 1823 in Tarbet or Arrochar, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Educated as a blacksmith, Campbell immigrated to Canada in 1848 and settled in London, Ontario. Several of his siblings also immigrated to Canada - brothers Robert, Daniel, Humphrey and Malcolm, as well as two sisters, settled in Southwestern Ontario, and his brother Colin settled in Manitoba. In 1851, John Campbell, Sr. married Agnes McNeil (born 1824) and they had five children: John Campbell (1852-1859) Sarah Campbell (1855-1934) John Alexander Campbell (1859-1864) Helen Campbell (1861-1865) John A. Campbell (1864-1940) John Campbell began work in London at a carriage making shop owned by Marcus Holmes. By 1855, he was engaged in his own carriage making business called, variously, London Carriage Factory or John Campbell and Son. John Campbell, Sr. was active in local politics, serving as alderman on the London city council between 1865 and 1871 and again between 1876 and 1879. He was also elected mayor in 1872 and re-elected in 1881 and 1882. John Campbell, Sr. died on November 7, 1901. His son, John Campbell Jr., continued the family business until 1923. Agnes Campbell died in 1914, Sarah Campbell in 1934, and John A. Campbell in 1940. The family is buried in section U of Woodland Cemetery in London, Ontario.
