História biográfica
John Boyd (1865-1941) was an amateur photographer and railway employee in Toronto and Sarnia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Boyd was born in Emyvale, County of Managhan, Ireland and emigrated with his family to Toronto. He attended the Bathurst Street Public School but, in 1881, left school to work as a messenger in the Freight Office of the Grand Trunk Railway System. In 1884, he was promoted to Inwards Clerk, and, three years later, Chief Clerk to the Agent. In 1894, he became a Special Travelling Agent and, later, in 1899, the Grand Trunk Agent at Sarnia and Point Edward. In 1912, Boyd returned to Toronto where he became a Weighing Inspector. Eventually, in 1918, Boyd became Superintendent of the Weighing Department of the Canadian National Railways, a position he held until his retirement in 1931.
In addition to his railway duties, Boyd was an amateur photographer. He first became interested in photography in the 1890's. An amateur naturalist, Boyd specialised in nature photography, as well as in Toronto buildings and street scenes. He was also an early innovator in photography, being one of the first Canadian photographers to use Dufaycolour film. Boyd's work received numerous distinctions; one of his photographs was ranked as one the ten best taken in the early 1900's.
In 1892, he married Sarah Alice Mills, with whom he had two children, Edna Alice Boyd, born 1893, and John Harold Boyd, born 1898
