Scope and content
Series consists of copies of articles and various other publications either written by John Alan Lee or regarding John Alan Lee.
The majority of the publications consist of academic articles regarding Lee’s sociological theories on love and sex. Series also includes several popular media articles regarding the same theories including the 1974 article “Styles of Loving” that appeared in Psychology Today.
Series includes Lee’s self-published “broadsheet,” or newsletter, called “The Old Gadfly.” Lee produced these issues from 1996 to 1999 and the newsletter offered criticisms of the university education system.
Series also includes a 20,000 word report submitted to the Ontario Court of Justice (General Division) regarding discrimination against gay men and lesbians and the changing definition of “family.” This report was submitted in the ground breaking family law case H. Vs. M. This case was later heard in the Supreme Court of Canada and established that same-sex partners should have the same benefits and obligations as opposite-sex common law couples.
Series also includes newspaper and other publications regarding the “right to die” movement. Many of the newspaper articles feature interviews with Lee discussing his views on the subject.
