Biographical history

Jean-Pierre Gagnon (1942- ) was an historian with the Directorate of History (DHIST) and a writer. He obtained his BA and his Ph.D. in history at Laval University. Apart from his work at DHIST, he taught at Ottawa and Laval Universities and at the Royal Military College of Kingston. While at DHIST, he published "Le 22e bataillon (canadien-français) 1914-1919. étude socio-militaire." He also wrote many articles for historical magazines, for the "Dictionnaire biographique du Canada," and for the "Dictionnaire des oeuvres littéraires du Québec." Moreover, he participated in many national and international conferences. He was invited as a historian to be part of the French television show "Le prix de la liberté" on "Canal D" (a Québec discovery channel). For many years he was secretary and member of the council for the Historical Society of Canada.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of material documenting Jean-Pierre Gagnon's research on Canadians in the First World War. Includes transcripts from interviews that Gagnon conducted in 1983 with First World War Royal 22e Régiment veterans, Canadian Expeditionary Force files used for his research, and photocopies from the National Archives of Canada of the military records of soldiers and officers who were in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). Also includes miscellaneous pamphlets and publications, military training manuals published by the Dept. of National Defence in the 1970s and in 1991, and chronological accounts of French-Canadian units during the Second World War. There are 11 series:
