Biographical history

James Kay Crotty was from Ingersoll Ontario. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) as Chief Petty Officer and was a leading torpedo operator during the Second World War. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM).

Custodial history

The documents were from the estate of Lt. James Kay Crotty and were inherited by Richard M. Crotty, a friend of Eric. When Richard passed away there was no interest shown by his family in keeping the documents. Mrs. Richard Crotty asked Eric Verbrugghe to find a place for them.

Scope and content

The fonds consist of three technical drawings entitled: “Motor and Generator Demonstration,” “Proposed Improvement on MK. VII, VII* etc. D/C [Depth Charge] Pistol Adjuster,” and “Depth Charge Pistol Adjuster.” There is also a letter on HMCS Algonquin’s naming and make, and a second letter addressed to the Superintendent Naval Armament depot, HMC Dockyard in Halifax N.S. explaining the D/C [Depth Charge] pistol adjuster’s use on the Mark VII to Mark X. The last page, “Op. Nep. [Operation Neptune]” is a report summarizing the events on the beaches from east to west in Normandy.
