Jacques Duperon Baby and his sons, James and Francis, were involved in the fur trade, the public service, Justice, landownership, and the militia during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Francis Baby was a member of the Upper Canada Legislative Assembly. Francois Baby, brother of Jacques Duperon, and his descendents played an important role in Quebec's politics and economy during the late 18th and 19th centuries. Jacques Duperon Baby (1731-1789) was a French fur trader in Detroit during the late eighteenth century. Jacques (James) Duperon Baby (1763-1833) was a public servant, office holder, judge, landowner, and a militia officer during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of records of various members of the Baby family, and are mainly concerned with the management of land assets, military activities, affairs of business and political involvements. Fonds includes correspondence; records regarding gifts of land, land leases, land grants, land sales, and land agreements; commissions; an affidavit; an account of damage to Francis Baby's property; a return of those killed and injured from the 2nd Regiment of the Essex Militia at the Battle of River Raisin; an Oath of Allegiance to King George III (including a list of those who have signed the oath); a passport to enter Quebec; returns of pay, lodging money and effective horses; bonds; estate settlement records; power of attorney records; military instructions; and a warrant of delivery for the extradition of Alexander Carter, a fugitive from Indiana. Fonds also contains a genealogical chart tracing the Baby family from 1590 to 1946, indicating variants of the Baby name, including Baby de Ranville, Babie and Baubie. The family tree complements the documents in the fonds by identifying names associated with the Baby family through marriage, including the Reaume, Hands and Wilson families.

Immediate source of acquisition
Materials in this fonds were loaned to the Archives of Ontario in 1962 for copying purposes by Mrs. G. Wright of the Department of Reform Institutions. Further materials were acquired by the Archives in 1963 from Mrs. Edith W. Taylor of St. Thomas, Ontario. Additional materials were donated to the Archives by Bob O'Donnell in 2006.
