Historia biográfica
John Castell Hopkins (1864-1923) was a journalist and editor in Ontario.
Hopkins was born in Dyersville, Iowa. He came to Canada at an early age and was educated in Bowmanville and Toronto. After working for a time at the Imperial Bank of Canada, he became an editorial writer for the Toronto Daily Empire in 1890. Three years later, he retired from journalism to devote himself entirely to literary endeavours.
Hopkins was the author of a large number of historical and biographical volumes, pamphlets and monographs. He also edited and published numerous works including the Canadian Annual Review, Canada: An Encyclopaedia of the Country, and Morang's Annual Register of Canadian Affairs.
In addition, Hopkins was a member of various organisations and societies. He was an honorary president of the Royal Society of Literature, a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and, between 1893-1894, honorary secretary of the Sir John A. Macdonald Memorial Committee. An ardent advocate of British imperialism, he also helped found the Empire Club.
In 1906, he married Anne Beatrice Mary Bonner with whom he had two daughters, Mary and Joan.
