Biographical history

The Village of Innerkip has its beginnings in the early 19th century when settlers from Scotland, England and Ireland settled in and around the 17th concession of East Zorra. Originally know as Melrose, the Village of Innerkip officially received its name with the coming of the post office in 1853. In 1913, Innerkip was incorporated as a Police Village.

Innerkip’s first centennial celebration was held in 1953. To mark its centennial anniversary a four-day program of events was held from July 31st till August 3rd. Events included a parade, sporting events, a garden party, dance, picnic, and fireworks. In addition, the 27th annual Innerkip cemetery and COF decoration service was held on the Sunday in the cemetery with the Tavistock band playing.

Innerkip’s silver centennial was celebrated in 1978 with events being held over August 4th to 7th in Innerkip Park. Events included the Innerkip Queen pageant, greased pig contest, a parade, Tug-o-war Tournament, beef barbecue, open air church service, soap box derby and bed race.

In 2003, Innerkip held its Homecoming Weekend (June 27-29) to celebrate its 150th anniversary. The three-day celebration included a variety of events such as 1850 vintage ball games, children’s carnival, beard growing contest, and horseshoes. In addition, a school reunion was held at Innerkip Central School, which originally opened its doors in 1913.
