Collection contains a variety of maps, plans, and drawings pertaining to the Town and Township of Whitby. Maps have been physically arranged according to map type, including Street and Tourism, Physical, Political, Transit, Historical, and Architectural Drawings.

Collection contains several thousand items, including correspondence, photographs, personnel records, financial records, subscription books, lease agreements, maps, plans and drawings from a number of railway companies that operated in Elgin County. This includes the Michigan Central Railroad, the London & Port Stanley Railway, the Pere Marquette Railway Company, the Grand Trunk Railway, the Wabash Railroad Company, Canada Southern, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Company, the Canadian National Railways, the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the Consolidated Rail Company (Conrail), as well as many of their subsidiary companies. There is a strong emphasis on the Michigan Central Railroad and the London and Port Stanley Railway.

The collection provides insight into the day-to-day interactions between local businesses, residents and the railway companies that were operating in Elgin County and increases our understanding of the county’s economic development over time. The collection documents changes in the county’s built environment as a result of the development of railway in the area, and illustrates the evolution of railway technology from early steam engines to electrified and high-speed rail.

The collection also includes personal records belonging to Ken Verrell, reflecting his role in various local organizations and his interest in railway history.

Benson from John Smart, 1854; (5) Copy of letter to directors, 1854; (6) Letter to Thomas Benson from John Smart, 1853; (7) Letter to John Smart from T. Benson, 1854; (8) Letter from E. P. Smith regarding property for railway; (9) 1854 document. Sidney Smith, Duncan McLeod and Charles Hughes; (10) Midland Railway Memorandum to John Smart Esq., Port Hope 1876.

Item is a charter of the Port Granby Harbour and Wharf Company, 1854. Document lists names of Shareholders: James Robertson; Peter Robinson; T. W. Metcalfe; Theron Dickey; John Walker and ? Smith.

The collection reflects the publishing interests of Nick and Helma Mika. It comprises four main series: photographic files, reference files, printing process files and other materials. The collection is strong in local history materials, particularly relating to the history of the United Empire Loyalists, railways, and the city of Belleville.

The photographs are arranged by subject matter and cover activities in and around the town of Deseronto, Ontario. The majority date from the late nineteenth century and many depict the lumber-related industries of the Rathbun Company in Deseronto. There are also photographs of school groups, churches, railways, First World War airfields and portraits of Deseronto citizens.

Series contains photographs of trains, steam engines, train stations and workshops. There is an emphasis on the Michigan Central Railroad Company and its subsidiary, New York Central Lines, however the series contains photographs that highlight a number of different railway lines that operated throughout Elgin County and Canada, including the London & Port Stanley Railway, the Pere Marquette Railway Company, the Grand Trunk Railway, the Wabash Railroad Company, Canada Southern, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Company, the Canadian National Railways, the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the Consolidated Rail Company (Conrail), as well as many of their subsidiary companies. Also contains photographs with scenic views of Elgin County, featuring many iconic bridges, beaches and landmarks, as well as streetscapes of downtown St. Thomas. Series also includes photographs of railway employees and personal photographs belonging to Ken Verrell, many highlighting his work on the local railways. Finally, series includes photographic negatives and a collection of photographic slides, with a significant emphasis on images of locomotives and trains, particularly belonging to the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, and mostly taken in St. Thomas, Ontario. Slides also contain images of fire trucks, buses, classic cars and some personal photographs, as well as some Scott Studio duplicates.

Series contains railway timetables as well as a document produced by the Michigan Department of State Highways and Transportation regarding railroad passenger service between Detroit, Michigan and Buffalo, New York, which mentions the railway through St. Thomas, Ontario.

Cargo book of Schooner Wanderer (initially belonging to the Port of Toronto, James Jackman Master; James Henry Jackman, owner), 1873 – [1882?] including Log Book commencing in 1883 with change of ownership to Captain John Spence of Southampton, Ontario. The ship's log, commencing in or around 1883 until 1887, records information about the weather and the ship's travels This includes records of travel on Lake Huron in the County of Bruce with references to Pike Bay, Point Clark, Port Elgin, Kincardine, and Saugeen. References to other ships include the Schooner Nemesis. Examples of goods shipped included wheat, peas, stone, barley, coal, lumber, bark, and salt.
