Jennifer Keck fonds

The Jennifer Keck fonds attests to her professional and public involvement in matters related to social justice. Her training and employment in social work and commitment to improving the lives of others is reflected in her scholarly works and records that show her community involvement. The documents illustrate her exploration of topics such as labour, welfare, Indigenous issues, community development and organizing, as well as poverty, employment, and issues related to women and families. These interests are reflected in the records created through projects that she undertook as an academic, such as the multifaceted Women at INCO project. The fonds indicates that she addressed these same issues in her community activism, through her involvement in Better Beginnings, Better Futures, Sudbury Women's Centre, Myths and Mirrors Community Arts, Circles of Strength: Sudbury Breast Cancer Support Group, and through frequent contributions to local media. Her work as a researcher for the Anti-Mercury Ojibwa Group and for her own publications on government job creation initiatives, labour and community issues is also represented in textual form.

These records, generated during Dr. Keck's professional career, also reveal her personal interests and goals. The speeches, presentations and workshops that are documented in the fonds reflect her struggle with cancer, her commitment to the underprivileged and her strong affiliation with feminist theory and practice.

The fonds comprises course and teaching materials, documentation, professional correspondence, administrative materials, and items that attest to Dr. Keck's scholarly output, such as presentations, publications and workshops. The fonds also contains photographs, physical objects and audio and videocassettes.

The majority of the documents contained in this fonds were created during Dr. Keck's time as a professor in the School of Social Work, Laurentian University. The fonds also comprises a comprehensive body of textual, audiovisual and photographic material on the Women at INCO project, documentation of her PhD thesis, taped interviews and transcripts with the working poor, and material related to her employment as a field research coordinator with the Anti-Mercury Ojibwa Group.

Ernie Checkeris fonds

The Ernie Checkeris fonds attests to the role that Ernie Checkeris played in the growth of the Ontario education system, as well as his role in specific challenges and debates facing the system. The fonds contains published and unpublished reports, correspondence, newspaper clippings, books, transcripts of speeches, and photographs relating to education in local, provincial, federal, and global contexts. Additional material includes personal correspondence and documentation relating to Ernie Checkeris’ interests and activity in the community. The manuscript of his book Thanks Be to the Gods!: A Memory with hand-written notations is also included.

The fonds also informs us of the changes and evolution of the education system in Ontario throughout the period of Ernie Checkeris’ trusteeship, with an emphasis on the specific challenges that would face the schools of the Sudbury region. Of particular insight is the centrality of issues related to the delivery of French language education and the challenges of bilingualism in the school system of Ontario and the Sudbury region.

Specific documentation about education includes correspondence and unpublished notes regarding the 1968 Hall-Dennis Report, issues of multi-culturalism, bilingualism, and special needs education.

Mick Lowe fonds

The Mick Lowe fonds attests to his activism and achievements in the field of writing and journalism. The records demonstrate his dedication and commitment to northern Ontario in general and the labour movement in the region in particular. The fonds contains various files, such as notes, letters, and briefs from Lowe’s work, on a voluntary basis, with the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) Local 6500 in Sudbury in the late 1970s to the 1980s. The fonds also consists of research notes on stories that Lowe covered over the years as a journalist, which includes his collection of various newspapers and periodicals. Many of the stories that Lowe wrote for The Globe and Mail and Northern Life can be found in his fonds which attests to his interests over the years. Lowe’s articles can provide insight as to the political and cultural milieu in Canada and Northern Ontario at the time of their publication. It also consists of Lowe’s personal papers which include his correspondence and notes. Moreover, the files depict and inform us on Northern Ontario and more specifically on labour, activism, and journalism.

The Housing Resource Centre (HRC) fonds consists of correspondence, memorandums, minutes, financial reports, press releases, news clippings, government documents, personnel files, and statistical reports.

The fonds attests to the different activities and realizations of the organization. It also informs us of the housing and accommodations of the Sudbury regional municipalities during the period of the HRC's activity, as well as the needs of the community in these areas. Further importance is given to the financial and organizational struggles of non-profit and non-governmental organizations throughout the 1990s, as well as changes in government programs. The HRC's initial mandate did not cover the advocacy and support activities that it would later undertake, but its frontline contact with homeless peoples allowed for observations on the cycle of homelessness in the context of North Ontario.

Barbara Dunphy fonds

The Barbara Dunphy fonds consists of audiotaped interviews of wives of miners from the Kirkland Lake area, and a few accompanying notes on the project. The interviews were done with the intention of producing a film, which did not get off the ground due to funding problems. Among the interviewees are: Myrtle MacLeod, Clara Golden, Kay Carlin, Anna Welyhorsky, Georgina Lebine, Mrs. Allison Mills, and Carol Magnusen.

The article was written by Hanley on the subject of civic responsibility for a secondary school magazine. The newspaper clippings are from local and national papers.

The remaining correspondence regards the publication of an article. The notes, printed material and newspaper clippings are also related to women and politics. There is a copy of the draft and also a copy of the completed article entitled "Feminist Politics: The Feminist Party of Canada".

Although the papers of this fonds do not reflect all of the professional activities of Dr. Zaborszky, they attest to her research achievements in the area of women and politics, and also to her personal involvement in the FPC.

The fonds is divided into two series. MG 1-0-1, Committee files, consists of agendas, minutes, correspondence, and support material of the Archives and Foundation Committee, Arts, Crafts and Hobbies Committee, Feature Country Committee, Program Development and Review Committee, Horticulture Advisory Committee, Long-Range Planning and Development Committee, and Women's Committee, committees on which Claire Coates served.

Series MG 1-0-2, Artifacts, consists of 17 CNE badges, presented to Claire Coates in her capacity as a member of the Canadian National Exhibition Association, Women's Committee, and as an associate director, director and vice-president, and 14 lapel pins issued by the CNE.

This sous-contains fundraising documents pertaining to rural collections and the Orphans’ Festival which show that the Sisters needed support from the surrounding community in order to operate the orphanage. Articles, tickets, programmes, and receipts from the annual Orphans’ Festival show the importance the event held, not only to the Sisters but also to Hamilton citizens. Financial records further illustrate how much money was needed to care for the orphaned children. The account books detail the necessary items Sisters purchased to successfully run the orphanage. The fee books show how much parents paid to foster their children. These records also demonstrate the needs the Sisters had on outside resources, like government grants and surrounding community funding. Documents pertaining to regulatory compliance are also found, including the 1965 Children’s Institutions Act and Regulations which outlines the rules the orphanage had to follow in order to operate within the law. Correspondence on a variety of topics is also present in the collection, including finance, education, and daily operations. There are photographs which offer a “snapshot” into the life of the orphanage. These images depict Sisters working in the orphanage, the Orphans’ Festival, children’s communion celebrations, and the dining hall. The sous-fonds also contains records created by the Advisory Committee of Mount St. Joseph Orphanage. These records outline the types of work the committee did, including structural changes to the building. There are several summaries of the history of St. Mary’s Orphanage, and a brief summary of the history of Mount St. Carmel Infants’ Home. The registers offer significant information about the children who remained in the care of the orphanage. These list information such as the orphan’s name, date of birth, religious denomination, nationality, date of admission and discharge, date of death [if applicable], and who took the child after he or she was discharged. There are also registers that list information about children who stayed for day stays, as well as children who were moved into foster homes. The sous-fonds contains information about orphans who received their religious sacraments, as well as baptismal records. Also found personal folders and admission cards, which provide information about application and departure, correspondence and parental addresses and occupations.

This series contains seven subseries containing material related to the administrative operations of the healthcare facilities founded, owned, and operated by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph Hamilton. The facilities concerned are St. Joseph’s Hospital, Brantford; St. Joseph’s Hospital, Guelph; St. Mary’s General Hospital, Kitchener; St. Joseph’s Community Health Centre, Stoney Creek; and St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hamilton. The records included are annals and histories, newsletters, news clippings, meeting minutes, financial records, property records, legal documents, annual reports, renovation and construction reports, photographs, material related to the estate and donations of Rev. E. P. Slaven, correspondence, bills, by-laws, and some records of events of the various nursing schools operated in connection with the hospitals. There are also records relating to the transfer of hospital administration.
