War Memory Fonds

The War Memory Fonds contain material relating to the remembrance of Allied military activity from 1914 to 1945. The material includes books, magazines, articles, newsletters, pamphlets, museum guides, maps, correspondence, and photographs which primarily discuss Allied involvement in the First and Second World Wars, including general histories, individual accounts, and battlefield maps.

The War Memory Fonds represents hundreds of individual donations bequeathed to Professor Terry Copp over the past several decades. They deal primarily with the Second World War, but some earlier material exists. Professor Copp has used many records from this collection to write on various aspects of the Canadian Army during the Second World War.

Henry Cassel fonds

Fonds consists of records documenting the life of Henry Cassel, particularly his attempt to emigrate from Europe prior to the Second World War and his internment in Canada as a German Prisoner of War (POW). Included is personal correspondence between Cassel and his parents; correspondence written by Cassel to potential employers and Canadian Jewish agencies; legal documents and certificates, such as Cassel's birth certificate and passport; family photo albums documenting the family and lives of Henry Cassel and his wife Reta; Cassel's autobiography; a journal and notebook written by Cassel during his internment; and, other internment records, such as government forms and poems and songs written by internees. Also included are newspaper clippings, articles, financial statements, genealogical research, and anti-Semitic ephemera collected by Cassel. Of particular note are newsletters that were produced during the 1990s by ex-internees who had kept in touch over the years. Records are arranged into 16 files.

Sir Gilbert Parker fonds

The Gilbert Parker fonds consists of three folders. The first contains pieces of correspondence, primarily to Col. W.N. Ponton. Amoung the items he sent to Ponton were two propogandist pamphlets by Reverend H.M. Gwatkin and William Arhcer respectively. The second folder contains two of his publications, of which the poem "Was it Some Golden Star" was put to music by Edward Elgar, and two publications directed towards the United States with the aim of bringing them into World War 1 on the British side. The final folder contains items from the Gilbert Parker Banquet in 1902 with items including a menu and an invitation.

W. C. Mikel fonds

This collection represents materials originating or used by W.C. Mikel. The first folder contains three speeches delivered during his time as Police Magistrate and Mayor. The next series of folders contains references and sources for his volume The City of Belleville History. The second folder contains correspondence regarding the book. Folders three through ten contain the notes Mikel used for each chapter. Folder eleven contains the plans for “Quinte City" and documents from the Town Planning Institute among others. Folder twelve contains unattributed reference material and general research for the book. Folder thirteen contains Mikel's collection of material for the 1924 United Empire Loyalist celebration which was held during his first term as Mayor. Folder fourteen contains Mrs. Mikel's obituary, a letter from Mikel to the Bank of Montreal, and a letterhead from the period he served as Police Magistrate. Folder fifteen contains three copies of his book, Godlove Mikel. The sixtenth folder contains a variety of newspaper clippings.

William Bell fonds

Most of the papers deal with Bell's activities as part of the Hastings Militia. Bell served under his friend, John Ferguson, and in 1825 succeeded him as colonel in command of the 1st Regiment, Hastings Militia. There is a small quantity of personal correspondence and 23 items relating to his role as Justice of the Peace and Coroner. Also included is a small file of correspondence from Robert Laing, who succeded Bell as schoolmaster on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Reserve. Harry LeRoy Babcock fonds

Colonel Babcock always intended to write his memoirs, but a busy life intervened. The contents and arrangement of his papers reflect this intent but unfortunately much of the research is incomplete. The papers are grouped roughly by subject, usually a military unit and then chronologically. The holograph items are limited. Much of the fonds consists of clippings, ephemera, keepsakes and the like. Scouting and the James Taylor material were given special treatment in his filing system. There is also a limited file on the establishment of Adolphustown Provincial Park and a file about issues with local ferries. Many of the photographs in the fonds are snapshots, undated and identified only by nicknames. The books are stories from the First World War. Collection consists of photographs and textual records created by the RCAF in the process of inventorying its fleet of ground vehicles. The technical data sheets provide detailed descriptions of the make, model and specifications of the required parts for each vehicle, including engines, tires, and batteries. Additional equipment requirements are also noted on the sheets. The photographs show the different vehicles from 3/4 view of left and right sides. The vehicles are grouped by function (e.g. snow
removal, medical, tow trucks etc.) with each vehicle type having its own code within that class of vehicle and different models further coded (e.g. L20-D57-1705 - where L represents the function, 20 the number of variation, D57 the type and 1705 the specific vehicle model). Files were originally housed in binders but have now been moved to folders and boxed, each group being arranged alphabetically based on the original binder titles.

Jeffrey Hale Supple Fonds

The fonds consists of original letters written by Jeffrey Hale Supple and by the correspondents that his mother wrote to following his death. There are no outgoing letters written by Supple’s mother. There are also three photograph albums documenting Jeffrey Hale Supple’s career from 1928 to 1934, and one photograph album that may not have belonged to Supple, but which documents another Royal Air Force (RAF) service member’s experience while stationed in Baghdad from circa 1924 to 1926. Work of museum staff and volunteers have been included in the fonds, including photocopies and transcriptions of the letters, and supplementary research (mostly copied articles). The fonds has been arranged in five series: Original letters; Photocopies of letters; Transcriptions of letters; Supplementary Information; and, Photograph albums. Original letters were given sequential point numbers after the catalogue number 1967.1157, ranging from 1967.1157.1 to 1967.1157.131. The photocopies and transcriptions of the letters were given global catalogue numbers 1967.1157.200 and 1967.1157.300 respectively. The photograph albums were given global catalogue numbers 1967.1157.400, 1967.1157.500, 1967.1157.600, and 1967.1157.700, but were also designated with letters A-D. Individual photographs were then given a sequential number based on their placement in the album, such as, for example A-1 for the first photograph in Album A. The supplementary information was given global catalogue number 1967.1157.900. The number 1967.1157.800 was not used.
