The fonds consists of typescripts for two of David Bakan's publications: the first title, 'Freud and the tradition of Jewish mysticism,' (1957) includes handwritten changes to the typescript in pencil and ink. The second title is a typescript copy of 'And they took themselves wives: the emergence of patriarchy in western civilization,' (1979). It has been copy-edited, showing/the editorial work of more than one hand, as well as handwritten additions to the text.

Fonds consists of a scrapbook started by the Class President of the 1946 September Class, Margaret Smith, as well as a letter to the UHN Archives from class member Joyce Kinslow, outlining the origins of the scrapbook. The scrapbook was originally kept in a binder. Ms. Smith kept the scrapbook up to date for a span of 60 years by having a page or pages dedicated to each graduate. Graduates would send pictures and notes to Margaret throughout the years for inclusion on their page in the scrapbook. The scrapbook would be shared and updated at class reunions and subsequently came to be held by Joyce Kinslow. Affixed to the pages of the scrapbook are photographs, letters, typed and handwritten entries, business cards, announcements, newspaper clippings, obituaries, menus for official gatherings, and a commemorative booklet, <i>The Nurses’ Alumnae Association of the Toronto Western Hospital’s Diamond Jubilee 1898-1958</i>.

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran through her activities as a lawyer, legal reformer, and activist. These records illustrate the breadth and variety of McPhedran's work in the areas of constitutional reform, women's international and national rights, women's health, and violence against women and children. Included in the fonds are administrative records of a number of non-profit organizations and committees of which she was a founder, including the Women's Legal Education Action Fund, the Gerstein Centre, the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence against Women and Children, and the Ad Hoc Committee of Canadian Women on the Constitution. Other records in this fonds, including subject files, correspondence and conference materials, document McPhedran's academic, research and writing work and her contracted work for women's health organizations. Fonds consists of 4 file folders of lecture notes that Mary took while a student at the Toronto Western Hospital Training School for Nurses. While mostly hand-written notes and sketches, some typewritten class handouts, publications, and exam booklets are also included. Each original file folder was annotated on the front to indicate contents or provide personal comments about the course. The portion of the original file folder with Mary’s personal annotations have been included within the contents of the corresponding file. These records are significant as they represent the learning experience of a typical nursing student from the Toronto Western Hospital in the late 1930s.

File 1.2 includes the booklet “Intestinal and Bowel Management” copyright 1928, Deshell Laboratories, Inc., Chicago; The Toronto Family Court Report for the Year 1939; and copies of the Examination for the Registration of Nurses in the Province of Ontario from 1930, 1935, 1937, 1939, and 1940.

File 1.4 includes notes on professional problems, ethics, two case histories and an exam paper.

Fonds consists of letters, cards and photographs documenting the relationship between Dr. O. Harold Warwick and former patient Archibald (Archie) Reid. In addition, fonds also includes two copies of an unpublished memoir by Mr. Reid entitled “Diary of an Illness” which recounts Mr. Reid’s experience of cancer. The second copy of this manuscript includes Dr. Warwick’s editorial comments. A photocopy of the case of A.R. as published in Tilden C. Everson and Warren H. Cole, Spontaneous Regression of Cancer (W. B. Saunders Company, 1966) is also included.

Collectively, the materials comprising this fonds illustrate virtually every aspect of Dr. Bigelow's personal and professional life as a surgeon and hospital division head, academic instructor and researcher, clinical investigator, author, lecturer, medical conference presenter and panellist, and member of numerous medical societies and medical/scientific committees.

In particular the fonds provides information about Dr. Bigelow's contributions to the advancement of cardiac surgery and the treatment of heart disease, especially his central accomplishments in contributing to the innovation and development of the surgical use of hypothermia in open-heart surgery and the electrical artificial cardiac pacemaker.
