Fonds consists of papers and photographs from the Long Family Collection. It includes materials created and accumulated by: Alfred H. Long (military publications, letter books), N. Tom Long (local history research files, St. Lawrence Hotel plan, directories, photographs), Geo. Wilson (memoirs, correspondence re: Port Hope Evening Guide, Wilson family photographs), and Brig. Series consists of a collection of family letters, mostly written to Mrs. George Wilson (nee Sarah Howell), 1817-1927. Other names mentioned, either as sender or receiver, include: Port Hope Evening Guide, Government of Canada, Susan Websters, Hannah Straw (Sarah's sister), George Wilson (Sarah's husband), Sarah Burnham, Mary Howell (Sarah's sister), Elizabeth Howell (Sarah's mother), and Henry Howell. There are also a few financial records (i.e. receipts) in the collection.

File consists of land records for Lot 28, Con 1 in Hope Township, 1817-1904. It includes: "Indenture of Bargain and Sale, Jonathan Walton and Elias Smith to James Hawkins," 1817; Deed, conveys and transfers to Francis Little from the University and College of Toronto, 1856; Deed between Mrs. Anne Wade, et al to Harriett Day, 1904; Mortgage, Harriett Day and Thomas B. Chalk, et al Trustees, 1904.

Benson from John Smart, 1854; (5) Copy of letter to directors, 1854; (6) Letter to Thomas Benson from John Smart, 1853; (7) Letter to John Smart from T. Benson, 1854; (8) Letter from E. P. Smith regarding property for railway; (9) 1854 document. Sidney Smith, Duncan McLeod and Charles Hughes; (10) Midland Railway Memorandum to John Smart Esq., Port Hope 1876.

Series consists of newspaper clippings (both copies and originals) related to various Port Hope hotels, c1854-1989. It includes: The Albion, Bletcher's Inn, Blackham's, The British, Canada House, Durham House, The Ganaraska Hotel, Hetherington's Hotel, Lake View House, Lees Hotel (Mill Street North), Martin Griffen's Hotel, Midland House, The North American, Queen's Arms Inn, The Plains, The Royal, Stenson's, St. Lawrence Hotel, Strong's Hotel, Turner House, The Walton (Queen's Hotel), and other miscellaneous inns, taverns and saloons. The series also contains two (2) paper napkins from the Queen's Hotel on Walton Street.

File consists of photocopies of the Port Hope Directory 1856-57 and Dodd's Northumberland and Durham 1880 Directory. Originals of both are also in this fonds.

Item is a Trust Deed for the Port Hope Baptist Church. Paper dated 4 Aug 1856.

File consists of a make shift envelope of paper and wax. Reads "October 31, 1856". A paper containing the trial of George Brogden for the murder of Thomas Henderson". "The Property of R. L. Benson" is written in personal pencil; and page 4 of the Daily Colonist has an editorial on the Brogden trial and how the verdict may have been arrived at. File consists of two (2) volumes: Book of Psalms and The New Testament (only Matthew and Mark). Both volumes are inscribed with the following message: "To my aunt Miss J T Stephenson A Souvenir of my visit to Canada in the summer of 1860" dated "Port Hope 28 Sep 60."

Series consists of a type-written copy of "Memoirs of My Life" by George Wilson, c1862. It was written in Montreal, and dedicated to Sarah (his wife). The series also includes one edition of the Port Hope Evening Guide (17 Jun 1929), as published by Geo. Wilson.

Item is a book which was presented as an award. The book plate reads "This prize for proficiency in bookkeeping was presented to John S. Gibson a pupil in the United Grammar of Common Schools, Port Hope, Dec 24th 1866." The book includes maps and illustrations.

Series consists of newspaper clippings and a Birthday Scripture Book concerning Terralta (158 Dorset Street West) and the Benson family (mainly Clara Cynthia Benson, PhD), 1868-1986.

Item is an 1871 Wesleyan hymnal inscribed to "E. W. Barrowclough, Wesleyville, Ontario August 10th, 1877". Two notes taped in front; Embossed stamp "Moulton & Long Wholesale & Retail Music Dealers Port Hope, Ont." Hymnal may have belonged to Elijah Barrowclough (1853-1938) of Wesleyville. Buried at Wesleyville United Cemetery.
