Peter Lash collection

The collection consists of records accumulated by lawyer Peter Lash. The origins and purpose of the collection is not known, but the records in the collection are a variety of business and property agreements from Ireland, originating from the city of Dublin and County Tipperary. The name William Curry, of Dublin, appears prominently in two of the three documents in the collection. Documents include deeds of co-partnership and rental indentures.

Item is a composite image created from two separate photographs detailing the boundaries of the Toronto Purchase between the Crown and the Mississaugas of the Credit. The original sale is dated to 1787, however there were questions raised about the legitimacy of the documents and about the delineation of the land. In 1805 a formal purchase was documented and is referenced in the text of the item. William Claus, the Deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs, signed on behalf of the Crown.

Fonds consists of records relating to three generations of the Cartwright family, their relatives, friends and colleagues. Most prominent are the papers of Mabel Cartwright, which includes correspondence with her family and relatives, diaries, notebooks and photographs.

Correspondence and other records from earlier generations of Cartwrights are included, most from Mabel Cartwright’s parents dating from the late 1860s to the early 1920s. Letters from Mabel Cartwright’s siblings, including Stephen, a missionary in Japan, are included. Financial and legal documents are included from the time Mabel Cartwright lived with her sister Winifred. The fonds also contains material accumulated and written by Hilda Fern Wood about Mabel Cartwright, and some records relating to the Wood family.

Fonds consists of 6 series that follow the chronological dates of the records and illustrate the progression of Ran Ide's professional career. Other than the first series, which covers Ran Ide's family and early years, the majority of the records focus on the professional aspects of his life. The final series consists of a finding aid compiled by the donor, John Ide, Ran Ide's son and contains anecdotes and detailed explanations of all of the records at the item level. There is also a series of writings from Ran Ide's Before and After: Recollections which he wrote for his family in 1996 and several writings of memories written by John Ide.

Fonds consists of records created and collected by Agnes Effie Sands Mern and other members of the Wawanosh family. Included are records relating to the life and work of various family members. In particular, the fonds contains records relating to the work of Joshua, David and William as chiefs of the Chippewas of Sarnia. Also included are the personal records of the family including correspondence, financial records, memorandum and account books and personal records relating to births, marriages and deaths. The records of most of the family members are intermingled, possibly a reflection of how Agnes Sands Mern kept them. Also included are the records of Agnes Effie Sands Mern (which make up the majority of the fonds) including her correspondence, financial records (including the records of the Wawanosh Post convenience store), records relating to her musical and artistic interest and records relating to her work in the Church and her activities organizing cultural events and concerts. Also included are the records of Agnes' husband John Phillips Mern such as his correspondence, financial records, notebooks and personal records relating to his son John P. Mern Jr.
Fonds also contains several sketches of members of the Wawanosh family as well as a large assortment of photographs. Photographs include portraits of family members, ministers and missionaries, friends and others as well as images depicting the daily life and travels of Agnes and John P. Mern. Photographs of John P. Mern consist of several albums documenting his time in the US navy and the childhood of his son. Several photographic processes are represented including tintypes, cartes de visite, cabinet cards, postcards and prints.

Fonds consists primarily of correspondence of Buell family members, concerning business, politics and family matters. Fonds also includes agreements, promissory notes, accounts, assessment notices, contracts, affidavits, an Act of Incorporation for the Western Assurance Company, power of attorney records, commissions, telegrams, poetry, and correspondence regarding various issues.

Included is correspondence regarding canal work at various locations, correspondence with several doctors, and a "spirit message" from clairvoyants. Fonds also contains records regarding the construction of the court house and jail at Brockville, including petitions to the government, contracts with carpenters and workmen, land agreements, bills for materials, and signature of subscribers. A family genealogy and autobiography are also included, as well as a copy of a self portrait of Andrew Norton Buell at age 24.

There is substantial correspondence on the subject of the U.S. Civil War, as a sister of the second Mrs. Buell (née Thorp) was married to Union Brigadier-General James C. Rice.
