City of Vaughan Council fonds (RG 1)

  • CA ON00373 RG 1
  • Fonds
  • predominant 1849-2014

Fonds consists of records that reflect the functions and activities of Council as a legislative and regulatory body in legal matters, taxation, justice and public protection, education, public health and welfare, finance, public accountability and planning. Records include, but are not limited to: working papers, minutes and resolutions, by-laws, reports to Council, and Court of Revision Records. The fonds chronicles Council activities and functions, and documents decisions and deliberations, and relationship with the civic administration, the Province of Ontario, the County of York, the Village of Woodbridge before 1971, and the Regional Municipality of York after 1971.

Working Papers

Series consists of draft motions, resolutions, minutes, calculations, along with occasional petitions, correspondence of Council and the electorate and other sundry documentation created by Council in the preparation of the official minutes and by-laws.
These records help to delineate Council’s functions, organization, activities and illuminate the origin, development and evolution of municipal policy in its most unrefined form. This series also provides evidence that failed to appear in the somewhat sanitized documents of final entry generated by Council such as minutes and September. The function of the Council as an early Court of Revision is chronicled here as well. (From 1850-1859, the Court of Revision was referred to as the Court of Appeal).

Council Committee/Committe of the Whole Agendas and Minutes

Series consists of records of the deliberations and decisions of the Town and City of Vaughan Council Committee. These records consist of notices of meetings and agendas, minutes, working notes, staff reports and related correspondence for Council appointed Committees such as Property Standards Committee, Planning Committee, Committee of Adjustment and so forth.

Series consists of records which represent the continuing ordinances passed by Council to deal with internal management of the municipality’s civic administration and political offices and to exercise its powers in the realm of local regulatory functions.
As the By-Laws represent the final decisions of Council on all matters brought before it, they provide an excellent source of evidence vis-a-vis the functions and activities of the Council as well as the civic administration. In addition, the series offers information relating to all manner of topical subjects and local personalities.

Petitions to Council

Series consists of formal written requests of supplicants to the municipal authority, requesting on the basis of specified legal entitlements, some dispensation such as redress of grievance, provision of particular services and so forth.

Court of Revision Records

Series consists of lists of appellants, correspondence, oaths/declarations of office of Court members, applications for adjustment of property taxes and minutes of the meetings of the Court of Revision including decisions rendered on specific properties. These records document Vaughan Township Council’s assumption of the role of a Court of Revision to adjudicate in the matter of appeals against the assessment rolls of Vaughan Township between 1955 and 1964. From 1965-1970, the records chronicle the transfer of this role to the York County Council. Certain early Court of revision records may be found in Series I.

WWI Photographs

Series consists of images from WWI in which Addision Alexander and his brother Ross, both served. Many photos depict other men from Vaughan, Ontario who also joined the war. Includes some excellent scenes of camp life and the destruction wrought by the war in France.
