Collection consists of documents in the German language which originated in Germany during the Second World War. Many are translated into English. They also include: documents relating to research on specific aspects of the First World War; lists of documents held in other archives; and some secondary published material about German military history in general. In addition to individual files, there are also series of files with finding aids. These include:

Fonds consists of photographs of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps Trials on Tractor Trains held in the Churchill, Manitoba area during the winter of 1947-1948. Also included are aerial shots of the various camps in the Churchill area.

Series consists of files covering a wide variety of subjects. Some of the major topics include: the history of the Directorate of Military Operations and Planning, naval convoys and Operation Neptune, organization of the Canadian Army and the 2nd Canadian Light Infantry Brigade, military communications, radar defence networks, emergency defence management and the reorganization of the Canadian Militia. The series is arranged in numerical order by the reference number.

Series consists of files on the cessation of hostilities in Korea during and after the Korean War. Includes correspondence and reports on progress and efforts to reach an armistice, and discussions on using Canadian troops to help rehabilitate Korea after the war. Also includes captions for photographs that were to be included in the Official History of the Canadian Army in the Korea War.

Sub-series consists of files regarding intelligence that assessed the threat of communism to North America, and the likelihood of an attack. The documents look at threats such as enemy lodgements, espionage and sabotage, and economic activities in undeveloped areas, and suggest ways in which Canada can improve security. Series is mainly comprised of research papers to be considered by the Joint Planning Committee, but also includes memoranda and correspondence.

Sub-series consists of files regarding the changing role of the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade Group (4 CIBG) in response to rising political tensions and the development of nuclear technologies. Includes memoranda, reports and correspondence that discuss moving 4 CIBG from a peacetime to defence position. Also includes documents on 4 CIBG’s role in guarding nuclear equipment during transportation and at Special Ammunitions Sites (SAS), and estimated vehicle and equipment requirements.

Sub-series consists of files concerning the threat of enemy lodgements in North America. Contains draft copies of defence plans to ensure Canada and the United States were prepared in the event of an attack, and includes memoranda, reports that contributed to their development. Main topics include joint Army/RCAF operations, the Canada-United States Emergency Defence Plan, and equipment and communications stockpiling in support of Canada-USA regional defence. Also includes maps of areas in Canada that were considered to be target.

Sub-series consists of files pertaining to Canada’s defence policy. Includes memoranda and reports that examine the amount of force required by the Canadian Army and RCAF to meet their commitments to the United Nations, and discussions on the reduction of Canada’s defense commitments during peacetime. The sub-series also includes documents that identify key points to consider while formulating a Canadian Army Tactical Concept.

Sub-series consists of files regarding improvements and objectives for air defence in North America. Many documents were created in response to rising political tensions to ensure North America was prepared in the event of an enemy attack. Includes memoranda and meeting minutes on air defence policy, proposed amendments and reports on NORAD Objective Plans, and memoranda to Cabinet Defence Committee on improvements in air defence.

Sub-series consists of files contributing to the development of the Canada-USA Emergency Defence Plan, which was to provide guidelines for the mutual defence of North America in the event of war with Soviet Union. Also includes files on the ALCANUS EDP, which was developed to support the Canada-USA Emergency Defence Plan. Files mainly include reports from conferences, draft emergency plans and proposed amendments.

Sub-series consists of files pertaining to NATO air defence in Europe, and its efforts to integrate defence control of all member countries to enhance security and military capabilities. Topics include the development of the Supreme Headquarters of Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Air Defence Technical Centre, as well as the development of an early warning system for allied command in Europe. Also discusses the rules of engagement for unidentified aircraft, defence against very low-flying aircraft, and long-term requirements for air defence.

Series consists of files pertaining to Canada’s defence policies against enemy attacks. Topics include Canada’s commitments to NATO defence in Europe, as well as its contributions to joint Canada-USA plans to defend North America. The files contain documents that discuss ways in which security and military capabilities can be enhanced to provide better defence, and evaluate Canada’s commitment to these plans. Series consists of files regarding Canada’s contribution to United Nations missions in the Congo. Includes memoranda and correspondence which largely concentrate on the United Nation’s requests for additional aid, and the possibility of Canada providing this support. Also includes reports on the status of Canadian personnel in the Congo.

Sub-series consists of files from the Sub-Committee responsible for mapping and charting locations in North America. Files include plans to photograph the Arctic Islands, as well as plans and priorities for aerial photography in other areas of North America. Also includes maps to identify the status of small, medium and large scale mapping projects.

Sub-series consists of files on Canada and the United States’ joint efforts to develop security plans and warning systems to defend North America against enemy threats. Files consist mainly of reports, charts and draft agreements which assess the threat and discuss ways in which Canada and the United States could collaborate to protect North America, including the development of a Distant Early Warning line, shared occupancy of key geographic locations, and security plans.

Sub-series includes various files from the Canada-USA Military Cooperation Committee. Topics include the Canada-USA Basic Security Plan, Canadian Army operating requirements in the United States, rules of engagement for unidentified submarines, and air defence objective plans. Also includes files from the Meteorological Sub-Committee, which examined the impact of weather events on North American defence plans. The majority of the files consist of meeting minutes, memoranda, draft reports and proposed amendments to reports.

Series consists of files from the Canada-USA Military Cooperation Committee, as well as those from the sub-committee on Mapping and Charting. Documents mainly discuss joint efforts between Canada and the United States to develop defence plans for North America, including security plans, the Distant Early Warning line, and aerial monitoring projects. Files mainly consist of meeting minutes, memoranda, as well as draft reports and agreements. There are 3 sub-series:

Series consists of files pertaining to the British Armed Forces. Includes messages, reports and memoranda that discuss the reorganization of British Forces, and the command and administrative structure of the army in the field. Also includes booklets on defence and pay rates, the 1948 National Service Bill, and maps showing locations of British Armed Forces.

Series consists of material from the Directorate of Military Operations and Planning including assorted reports, messages and correspondence, as well as information they collected on nuclear warfare from the years 1952-1955. These papers include:

• Messages from Army Headquarters in Ottawa to the various directorates, or messages from one directorate to another.
• Requests sent to the Department of Defence Production recommending the purchase of weapons.
• Staff Ammunition Scales which include information on the distribution and types of weapons found across the Canadian Forces.
• After action reports.
• Tables of Seaward Defences for both the east and west coasts that assess the defences of the ports and bases.
• Extracts from conferences about the design of the uniforms for various exercises performed by soldiers.
• Information on the Canadian military’s desire to work out a deal with the British so that they could store unit equipment in the United Kingdom.
• Correspondence between the Canadian military and the Military Adviser for the High Commissioner for India to Canada, with advice on weapons.

Series consists of memoranda regarding casualties in conventional and nuclear warfare in the early 1960s. Includes a conventional casualty estimate for Ground Forces Allied Command Europe in 1956. Also includes extracts from the minutes of the Army Policy Co-ordinating Committee (APCC) 9 May 1954 meeting defining the division of responsibility between the General Staff (GS) and Adjutant General (AG) branches.
