Sub-series consists of files regarding intelligence that assessed the threat of communism to North America, and the likelihood of an attack. The documents look at threats such as enemy lodgements, espionage and sabotage, and economic activities in undeveloped areas, and suggest ways in which Canada can improve security. Series is mainly comprised of research papers to be considered by the Joint Planning Committee, but also includes memoranda and correspondence.

Also discusses the rules of engagement for unidentified aircraft, defence against very low-flying aircraft, and long-term requirements for air defence.

Series consists of material from the Directorate of Military Operations and Planning including assorted reports, messages and correspondence, as well as information they collected on nuclear warfare from the years 1952-1955. These papers include:

• Messages from Army Headquarters in Ottawa to the various directorates, or messages from one directorate to another.
• Requests sent to the Department of Defence Production recommending the purchase of weapons.
• Staff Ammunition Scales which include information on the distribution and types of weapons found across the Canadian Forces.
• After action reports.
• Tables of Seaward Defences for both the east and west coasts that assess the defences of the ports and bases.
• Extracts from conferences about the design of the uniforms for various exercises performed by soldiers.
• Information on the Canadian military’s desire to work out a deal with the British so that they could store unit equipment in the United Kingdom.
• Correspondence between the Canadian military and the Military Adviser for the High Commissioner for India to Canada, with advice on weapons.
