Series consists of material written by Alan James between 1957 and 1998. Includes articles, book reviews, lecture texts and book chapters, which were published in a variety of peacekeeping journals, magazines, newspapers and books. Subjects covered include the United Nations generally, and specifically in relation to international relations, the Cold War and disarmament, and UN peacekeeping in general as well as specific peacekeeping operations. The series also contains two books by Alan James. Sovereign Statehood: The Basis of International Society, was published in 1986 as part of the Key Concepts in International Relations Series, and Britain and the Congo Crisis: 1960-1963 was published in 1996.

Series consists of correspondence between Alan James and various others from 1981 to 1990. His correspondents include James O.C. Jonah, Assistant Secretary-General for Field Operational and External Support Activities, and Erika G. Alin, of the National Council on US-Arab Relations (of America). All correspondence relates to peacekeeping and in particular, to the Middle East and Turkey. Aspects of the 1974 Nicosia Airport incident (United Nations Force in Cyprus – UNFICYP), the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the United Nations Observation Group in Lebanon (UNOGIL), and a visit made by Alan James to the UNIFIL Headquarters in Israel in 1986 are discussed.

Series consists of 341 prepared questions and answers for an interview series with Alan James conducted by the English PQA Radio Programme. This script was later translated into Arabic and broadcast to the Arabic world. Questions were from journalists from such countries as Jordan, Libya, Iraq and Morocco. The series also contains handwritten notes by Alan James regarding an interview from 28 November 1985 with John Kenny and Col. Pete Woolley regarding the Multinational Force (MNF).

Series consists of records relating to four countries within Asia and Asia Pacific. Records for East Timor (1975-1985), the Western Province of Paupa New Guinea (1969-1978) and Vietnam / Cambodia (1979) consist of newspaper clippings and United Nations documents. Also includes newspaper clippings of the Vietnam Supervisory Mission in 1973.

Series consists of 10 newspaper clippings from The Times concerning the resignation of Alexander Haig, the American Secretary of State in 1982. Reasons were not given for the resignation, although it was indicated that a succession of disputes over matters of key policy was the reason. Also includes a profile of the Secretary of State-Designate, George Shultz.

A large number of Alan James’ publications, generally journal articles from 1957 to 1998, United Nations (UN) and NATO records, as well as information on the Falkland Island’s War are contained in the series. Some of Alan James peacekeeping records are arranged generally, or chronologically, but the majority of records, consisting of United Nations (U.N.) records and newspaper clippings relating to peacekeeping, are arranged according to the country. Series consists of records and published documents of the United Nations. The published documents include treaty series including treaties and international engagements registered with the Secretariat of the League of Nations, Reports of the International Law Commission, Security Council, Resolutions and Decisions of the General Assembly and Secretariat records. Also contains records concerning the United Nations Emerging Force, the Special Committees on peacekeeping operations and the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF). Series also includes: United Nations documents relating to humanitarian issues, human rights, peacekeeping preparations and finances; press releases; magazines articles; and newspaper clippings.

Series consists of records related to NATO meetings held in Greece, Koblenez, and NATO Headquarters in Brussels in June, October, and November (respectfully) in 1993. The material from these meetings consists of discussion papers concerning NATO and peacekeeping, as well as a few press releases. The aide-memoire and material from course eighty-three, taught at the NATO Defence College in Rome, Italy, in November of 1993, is also contained in this series.

Series consists of records relating to peacekeeping in Nicaragua from 1989 to 1994, and in El Salvador from 1990 to 1995. These records consist of newspaper clippings and United Nations documents concerning the United Nations Observer Mission to Verify the Electoral Process in Nicaragua (ONUVEN) and the United Nations Observer Mission in El Salvador (ONUSAL). The series also contains of general records relating to peacekeeping in Central America and the United Nations Observer Group in Central America (ONUCA) from 1987 to 1993.

Series consists of records relating to peacekeeping in five European countries from 1950 to 1998. These include general records for peacekeeping in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s, Cyprus, from 1964 to 1993, and Yugoslavia, Bosnia, and Herzegovina from 1991 to 1998. Also includes records for the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) and the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). The majority of the records consist of United Nations documents and newspaper clippings.

Series consists of the papers of Major-General Bruce MacDonald, which describe his involvement in the 1965-1966 United Nations India-Pakistan Observation Mission (UNIPOM). Originally intended to be published, the book was never completed. There are also series records relating to the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) from 1971 to 1998. Shafqat Hussain Chauhdry’s thesis for a Doctorate of Philosophy degree entitled United Nations India-Pakistan Observation Mission (UNIPOM), 1965-1966), published in 1979, is also included in the series.

Series consists of records relating to seven countries within the Middle East collected by Alan James from 1960 to 1998. General files concerning all Middle Eastern countries contain newspaper clippings and United Nations documents from 1969 to 1995. The Iran / Iraq files contains records of the Iran and Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIMOG), records concerning the Gulf War in 1987 and 1989, the Gulf Cease Fire from 1988 to 1990 and newspaper clippings on the Iranian Airbus Incident in 1988. The records relating to peacekeeping in Lebanon constitute the majority of the series. These records relate to the Multinational Force (MNF) in Lebanon as well as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The series also contains records relating to mines found in the Red Sea in 1984, and the hijacking of the Italian Cruiser “Achille Lauro” by Palestinian gunmen in 1985.
