Bell served under his friend, John Ferguson, and in 1825 succeeded him as colonel in command of the 1st Regiment, Hastings Militia. There is a small quantity of personal correspondence and 23 items relating to his role as Justice of the Peace and Coroner. Also included is a small file of correspondence from Robert Laing, who succeded Bell as schoolmaster on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Reserve. Entries list goods sold, prices of goods, customers' names, and customers' accounts. Goods include groceries and sundries such as silk, muslin, thread, whip lash, nails, cod fish, rum, and snuff. Many entries are for various fabrics and sewing items.
