Toronto General Hospital. Pharmacy and Therapeutics CommitteeSeries consists of reports conducted by and for the Nursing Department and miscellaneous items. File 17.0.1 consists of a report on turnover in the Department, prepared in June 1981 by the Task Force on Nursing Turnover, Louise Lemieux-Charles and Bernice Gerhart Co-Chairpersons. The purpose of the Task Force was “to identify problems which may contribute to high staff turnover…[and] to make recommendations to improve retention of nursing staff.” File 17.0.2 consists of the final report (May 1983) on TGH Operating Room Services, conducted for the Vice President, Nursing by Woods Gordon Management Consultants. The report reviews factors “impeding the efficient utilization of the operating rooms and generating conflict amongst the staff” and makes recommendations, including “upgrading systems (information, staffing, materials management) and the expansion of some resources (space and staff).” File 17.0.3 consists of a Nursing Staff Survey (November 1983), a follow-up assessment of the effectiveness of staff retention strategies recommended in the report contained in file 17.0.1 .
Toronto General Hospital. Nursing DepartmentFile 22.5.1 contains correspondence, reports, proposals etc., created, received and collected 1965-1983 by Dr. T.P. Morley in his capacity as TGH Neurosurgeon-in-Chief (1962-1979) and thereafter concerning long-term planning and development of the TGH Division of Neurosurgery and the proposed Playfair Neurosciences Unit (established 1978 at the Toronto Western Hospital). File 22.5.2 contains a memorandum Dr. Morley prepared for his private information concerning his involvement in the TGH Task Force on Nursing 1969, and related developments in the administration of the TGH Nursing Department. File 22.5.3 contains copies of annual reports (1972/1973 to 1978/1979) of the University of Toronto Division of Neurosurgery, prepared by Dr. Morley in his capacity as Chairman of the Division. File 22.5.4 includes a memorandum Dr. Morley created for his private information concerning a meeting (November 29, 1968) of the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine Council at which was discussed the issue of “democratic Faculty representation on high levels of university government…[and on the] Borden Committee…[a standing committee of the Board of Governors of the University of Toronto charged with] deciding the future structure and fate of the medical school”.

File 1.6.1 contains materials deposited in a cornerstone box in April 1911 during a ceremony marking the start of the building of the College St. site of the TGH, including lists as of April 11, 1911 of TGH House Medical Staff, nursing staff (including student nurses), and honorary governors of the Board of Trustees; “A Brief Historical Sketch of the Toronto General Hospital, its Origin and its Progress…1818 to 1911”, a manuscript by A.F. Miller, TGH Secretary and Treasurer 1876-1917; a “List of Special Grants and Subscriptions to the new TGH Building Fund” 1905-1911; and an “Original Estimate of Cost of the new Buildings of the TGH” adopted by the Board of Trustees March 2, 1910.
File 1.6.11 contains a sketchbook commissioned by Toronto General Hospital and presented to Sir John M Gibson, Lt. Governor of Ontario, to mark the opening of its new buildings, designed by Darling & Pearson at 101 College Street, June 1913 to January 1914. Gold-stamped leather binding design, title page inscription, and six black-and-brown ink drawings by J.E.H. MacDonald depicting various TGH buildings.
File 1.6.12 contains a booklet on the Private Patients Building printed by Grip Limited, Toronto for W.G. Macfarlane Ltd. With decorative borders and cover by J.E.H. MacDonald and line drawings by Tom Thomson. Undated, but probably to commemorate opening of new TGH buildings, June 1913 to January 1914.
File 1.6.13 contains the menu and program for a dinner in honour of W.E. Gallie on the occasion of his retirement from the chair of surgery at the University of Toronto, 1947. Includes illustrations designed and drawn by Mabel Gill with the aid of R.I. Harris.
