The fonds consists of records concerning the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Chatham. It contains material related to the hospital, the school, the student nurses, and the Alumnae Association. The fonds contains correspondence, pamphlets, booklets, newsletters, promotional material, scrapbooks, photo albums, yearbooks, a diploma, a nursing kit, a crest, two large, matted photographs of graduation classes, and news clippings related to the school, the hospital, the students, and the alumnae. It also includes a variety of photographs of student nurses, student life, the school, the hospital, hospital staff, and alumnae events, and memorabilia from alumni and graduation events.

The Alumnae Association was dedicated to connecting the students and preserving the history of the school. The Alumnae Association’s newsletters, event preparations, treasurer’s book, annual report, constitutions, and bylaws are present.

Notable material directly concerning St. Joseph’s Hospital includes a 1957 constitution and moral code of the medical staff and a list of administrators. There is also a list of the directors of the School of Nursing.

This series contains records about the St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Chatham, Ontario and the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association. The material is concerned with the daily life of student nurses, their involvement with St. Joseph’s Hospital, and the activities of the Alumnae Association.

The Alumnae Association was formed to promote the interests of the hospital and school and maintain connections between the graduates. Since the school closed, the Alumnae Association has also been dedicated to preserving the history of the school and its graduates. The majority of the records in this series were collected by Marion Campbell who was a very active member of the Alumnae Association.

Some of the materials are items which the student nurses used. There is the 1957 constitution, bylaws, rules, and moral code of the medical staff of the hospital. There is also a student’s prayer manual and an information booklet welcoming student nurses to the nursing school. The booklet outlines the school’s objectives, instruction, admission requirements, scholarships, services, student activities, and the Alumnae Association.

There is correspondence between Marion Campbell and the Sisters of St. Joseph of London concerning her research into the administrators and directors of nursing at the hospital. Included is a list of administrators from 1890 to 1984 and a list of directors of the School of Nursing from 1895 to 1970. There are also news clippings about the School of Nursing, the student nurses, alumnae, and St. Joseph’s Hospital.

From the Alumnae Association, there are pamphlets, correspondence, promotional material, lists of graduates, lists of alumnae, and newsletters. The material is primarily concerned with reunion events hosted by the association. There is also a 1965 annual report and the treasurer’s cash book which tracks the association’s finances.

There are a variety of photographs. This includes photographs of Sisters, nurses, graduations, hospital and nursing school buildings, alumnae, and alumnae events. There are two alumnae photograph albums with photographs of the graduating classes from 1938 to 1970. There is also a scrapbook with photographs and ephemera of student nurses and alumnae events.

The series contains a guest book for the “Legacy of St. Joseph” event in 2004. The series also contains a nursing kit that belonged to Jean Wright Trudell, a former nurse, who was a graduate of the nursing school. This kit is in a leather case with her name stamped on it in gold, and contains four sharps, two hypodermic needles, one blood collection vial, and one set of tweezers. The series also contains an iron-on fabric crest for the School of Nursing that belonged to Mrs. Trudell, and a graduation invitation from 1914.

Margaret Haskell Brown

This series consists of a booklet containing the constitution and bylaws, and a nursing pledge. Also found in this series is the graduation diploma for Margaret Haskell Brown. There is also an obituary for Margaret Haskell Brown, a graduate of the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Chatham who nursed at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chatham for 42 years. All of the materials in this series belonged to her.

Yearbooks

This series contains six nursing school yearbooks entitled “Caritas.” Two of the yearbooks were donated by Kathy McGuire who graduated from the school in 1968 and contain autographs from her classmates. One of the yearbooks belonged to Sister Mary Gregory Fleming. Sr. Mary Gregory was appointed was appointed director of nursing education at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chatham in 1955, and then became director of nursing from 1967 to 1969. Other yearbooks belonged to Cathy Dawson, a 1966 graduate.
