Ron Rosenes fonds

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Ron Rosenes. The records document the activities of several HIV/AIDS-related organizations based in Toronto, particularly the AIDS Committee of Toronto and the Canadian Treatment Action Council, in which Rosenes was involved as an activist. Records also document several AIDS conferences attended by Rosenes, and the 2006 AIDS conference held in Toronto. Included in the fonds are: correspondence, memoranda, reports, notes, presentations, programmes, agendas and minutes, financial records, and other textual material. The fonds also includes the script of a play by Edward Albee, a friend of Rosenes.

The materials reflect the political action under taken by the organization on a local and national level. Materials also include those of the National Gay Rights Coalition (NGRC) of which Gays of Ottawa served as the national coordinating office during the mid 1970’s. Gays of Ottawa’s involvement with the Coalition for Gay Rights in Ontario (CGRO) is also shown through the number of documents held relating to the provincial group.

Meeting minutes detail disagreements over funds allocations, discussions of group management techniques, reflections on equity within the group and how social dynamics contribute to equity and inequity. A majority of the materials consist of handwritten or printed notes recording and planning LOG activities and meetings. The fonds also contain LOG promotional materials and photos.

Fonds consist of professional freelance photography created by David Hawe.

Fonds consist primarily of 35mm black and white and colour negatives. Printed photography mainly consists of contact images of related negatives.

A large portion of the photography consists of freelance modeling photography and headshots.

Represented personalities include many Toronto-based drag performers, Salah Bachir, Kyle Rae, Ru Paul, Sky Gilbert, Keith Cole, Scott Thompson, Madonna, Enza the Supermodel, Chris Edwards, R.M. Vaughn, and Dini Petty. Many photographs of Woody’s (bar) staff are also included.

Fonds also include photography taken at many events, such as Toronto Pride, plays at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, events at Toronto bars and clubs, drag shows, Mr. Leather competitions, Casey House events, leather parties, coronation of Empress and Emperor of Toronto, Harbourfront Film Festival, Win a Date with a Bartender, Hooker of the Year, Priape Fashion Show, Judy Garland Memorial Bowling League party, Cabbagetown Group Softball League events, Much Music, Unity Party, Halloween at the Masonic Temple, "Cedars" campground opening, among others.

The fonds consists of the organizational records of the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT) dating from 1979 to 2014, ranging predominantly from 1983- 1993. The records reflect the governance and administrative activities of ACT, its work on HIV/AIDS prevention and sexual health education, its support services and its HIV/AIDS-related resources and guides. The fonds also contains material from events, forums, workshops and conferences that ACT organized, took part in, or attended, and records from its fundraising events and galas. There are records that resulted from ACT’s involvement in collaborative projects with various organizations, groups and government committees, and material that was collected by ACT and made accessible to the public through its Access, Resource and Information Centres. The fonds contains the records of James Fraser, consisting of personal correspondence, articles by Fraser primarily about gay archives and history, newspaper articles about Fraser’s gay activism, a collection of historical editorials about homosexuality compiled by Fraser, and miscellaneous records pertaining to Fraser’s life and organizations with which he was involved. The fonds also includes obituaries and memorials for Fraser. While most of the records pertain to Toronto, his academic work was done in British Columbia, and some records relate to his early life and family in New Brunswick. The collected editorials are drawn from Canadian newspapers.

Fonds consist of records documenting the operations and administration of the Dignity Vancouver, a chapter of Dignity Canada Dignité (DCD). These materials were donated by Kevin Simpson, who played a prominent role in the Vancouver chapter, including time served as President and Liturgy Coordinator. Simpson also spent time in the role of President and in the role of Treasurer for DCD.
Included are Vancouver chapter meeting minutes, reports, conference and House of Delegate materials, correspondence, financial and budget materials (primarily for the national organization), press clippings, brochures, membership lists, materials regarding applying for charitable status, various versions of DCD’s Constitution, and other textual materials.
