Juergen Rohwer fonds

Fonds consists of correspondence between Dr. Juergen Rohwer and the Directorate of History during the period 1962-1969. Much of the correspondence was with E.C. Russell, a Canadian naval historian. At the time of the correspondence Rohwer was the Director of the Library of Contemporary History at Stuttgart University in West Germany. Subjects covered include: the performance of the German acoustic torpedo the "Gnat"; the sinkings of U-boats by Canadian ships; and the sinking of Canadian ships by U-boats. Also includes memoranda.

Fonds consists of the photocopies of the Library of Congress' 30-page finding aid to the William Sowden Sims' papers, and correspondence dating from Sims' time as Commander U.S. Naval Forces in Europe during the First World War. The major topics include anti-submarine warfare, Atlantic escort problems, the United States destroyer construction programme, and British-American relations in military, especially naval, matters. Fonds consist of National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ) action directives (1994 - ) and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) situation reports (sitreps) (1995 - ). The directives emanate from the CDS, began in 1973, and are issued irregularly as the need arises. The situation reports are used to provide information on the major objectives of the Dept. of National Defence and are released on an interim basis. They cover a wide variety of topics relating directly to Canadian Forces personnel as well as planning and policy. Also includes two visitor registers signed by various military commanders from different countries (or from international organizations) on the occasion of their visit to Canada between 1990-2001. In addition, there is a Canadian Forces Manual of Individual Training, Volume 1, General, Part Two, Description. Various training topics are covered for individuals enlisted in Canadian Forces such as computer-assisted learning, management techniques and statistical reporting procedures. Assessment guidelines and factors affecting the learning environment of the trainee are also discussed. Also includes a file regarding the review of Canada-United States nuclear related agreements during 1985-1986. There are also summary records of discussion for the Armed Forces Council (1976-1980) and the Commanders’ Conferences (1970-1975), as well as a CDS directive regarding the 1972/73 Force structure and planned changes [filed under 72/238]. Also includes a file of miscellaneous documents entitled “CDS Operational Directive to Commanders 1976/77”.

Includes the English manuscript, the first and second French translations, the illustrations with some French captions, a mockup of the final book, in English, and several maps. Also includes a map (2012/12) of the first day of the invasion of Normandy with an overlay containing information regarding the Allied advance at Sword, Gold, and Juno Beaches as well as the German defence.

Operational research involves the study of strategic, tactical, or logistic processes with the aim of providing a better basis for decisions on the employment of men and equipment.The documents were generated from three main sources: the Chief Advisor Operational Research (a British body), the Department of Naval Operational Research (a British body), and the Directorate of Operational Research (a Canadian body). In addition, some documents were produced in collaboration with the Anti-submarine Warfare Operational Research Group (an American body). Includes reports, memoranda, notes and other documents.

Fonds consists of six files containing documents released to the media by the Director General Public Affairs on 17 January 1997 regarding the investigations into misconduct and poor performance by members of the unit of CANBAT 2 at Bakovici Hospital in Bosnia and Hercegovina and the mistreatment of Capt. Sandra Perron, Canada's first female infantry officer. Fonds also contains news clippings from Canadian, American and French newspapers describing the opening of the Juno Beach Centre in Normany, France; the burial service for the remains of three unknown Canadian soldiers found near the Passchendarle New British Cemetery in Belgium; and the ceremonies held to mark the 60th Anniversary of Dieppe. There is also a nine minute video cassette titled, "On Patrol for Canada - The Halifax Class Frigates" which introduces the Halifax Class of the Canadian Patrol Frigates.

Fonds consists of 30 biographical files assembled by Eric G. Finley on men who had served with Beach Commando "W". The biographical files are all classified as Protected "B". The file consists mainly of original correspondence between Finley and other members of the military unit. Most of the information is biographical and reflects the military career of these individuals. Original photographs and photocopies of pictures are included, as well a number of reproduced photographs taken from the National Archives of Canada. Also included are newsletters and pamphlets on Combined Operations with personnal accounts and experiences. There are also three folders of miscellaneous documents. Folder 2 of the fonds contains a 3 part article written by Eric Finley and Ed Storey entitled "Royal Canadian Naval Beach Commando 'W'", and which appeared in "Military Past and Present", Nos. 57 to 59.

William Glover fonds

Fonds consists of transcripts of interviews conducted by Lt. Commander William Glover on assignment for Directorate of History of the Department of National Defence. Glover was assigned to research personnel and training policies and practices in the Royal Canadian Navy between 1939 and 1945. Each subject held a position as an instructor or a staff officer responsible for personnel and training. Ten interview subjects were selected accordingly. They included: John Alexander Charles; David Allan Collins; Jim Dowler; Grace McDowell; Robert W. Murdoch; George Nation; Bent Gesture Sivertz; Gordon W. Stead; John Howard Wade; and Edward Arnold MacFayden. The fonds also includes a paper entitled "In Quest of a Canadian Naval identity" written for the Second Naval Historical Conference held in Halifax in 1993.

Fonds consists of materials documenting the history and activities during 1989-1990 of the negotiations of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) before it was implemented 19 November 1990, as well as the Confidence and Security Building Measures (CSBMs) before it was implemented 1 January 1991. Also includes material pertaining to the High Level Task Force (HLTF) proposal for a conventional arms reduction treaty. Includes messages, memoranda and position papers of the CSE and CSBM Working Groups, CFE Negotiations Reports, discussion papers and various other documents. Some of the major subjects covered include: demobilization of armed forces in Europe, arms control, treaties, armoured vehicles, combat vehicles, tanks, helicopters, arms control, European military policy and European defences.

12 Militia Group fonds

Fonds consists of files from 12 Militia Group Headquarters and IV Princess Louise Dragoon Guards squadrons in Ottawa, Prescott and Smiths Falls. The materials document the typical activities of the militia in the 1950s and early 1960s. File lists found with Series II, III and IV indicate that these materials have been stripped and retained whereas other files appearing on these lists were destroyed. File titles indicate general topics of files and these are varied. Most textual material consists of correspondence and memoranda. There are three scrapbooks, one of which consists of pictures, and the other two of newspaper clippings pertaining to 12 Militia Group. Most of the pictures have brief captions describing their contents. There are six series, as follows:
