Edwin Vivian fonds

Fonds consists of diaries written by Edwin Walker Vivian. Edwin writes about the weather, his daily chores and his activities including the literary club and skating. The fonds also contains school examination certificates and family photographs.

Major projects represented in this fonds were mostly undertaken in Peterborough and are as follows: Peterborough Civic Hospital; Peterborough Memorial Centre; Lakefield Preparatory School; Peterborough Collegiate Vocational School; Lakefield District High School; Peterborough Medical Centre; Abramsky Building; Cherney's store and warehouse; and Peterborough Golf and Country Club. Fonds also includes a list, probably arranged in chronological order.

This fonds contains original records documenting 19th and early 20th century land ownership for several parcels of land in rural Essex County, including deeds of land, affidavits, and mortgages. There are also handwritten notes tracking the chain of ownership for a specific parcel. The lands documented are (1) Lot 16 South of Middle Road, Rochester Township, and (2) Lots 17 and 18 in the Ninth Concession of Sandwich South Township (formerly Sandwich East Township). These transactions involve farmers, farmwives, and bankers, as well as single, widowed, and married people, neighbours, and relatives.

This fonds consists of materials supporting two self-guided walking tours that highlight historic architecture and institutions in the former Town of Sandwich (now a part of Windsor, Ontario). Both are undated and do not indicate who created or distributed them. The first is a bilingual brochure entitled "A Walk Through Old Sandwich -- Windsor, Ontario," and is geared toward adults, possibly ca. 1980s-1990s. The second is a stapled 8 1/2 x 11 package entitled "A Field Study of Early Sandwich," possibly ca. 1970s-1980s. This one is designed for teachers leading students, and includes teaching objectives, methods and preparation, the tour stops and suitable questions for each, extended activities, and further references.

This fonds consists of a single file containing five short histories (written 1969-2019) about aspects of the Maltese-Canadian community. As one of several significant settlement areas for Maltese immigrants in Canada, Windsor is featured prominently. Three of the items (including one early draft with handwritten corrections) are by Maltese-Canadian Windsorite Angelo Dougall; two are by Maltese-Canadian Dan Brock and originally appeared in a Maltese-Canadian newsletter.

Collection consists of two photographs. One photograph is of the Stewart family reunion held in Guelph in 1951, and the other, is of David Stewart. The textual records consist of family group record sheets, notes and a program guide for the reunion.

This collection consists of three scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings from various local newspapers that document the activities of the Daughters of Scotland Guelph Chapter. There are also some photographs found throughout the scrapbooks that also document the activities of the chapter.

The Fonds consists of minute books, administrative and executive records, committee records, membership records, reports, bird sighting records, papers written by members, and T.O.C. publications, as well as photographic materials.

The minute books include some information on the club’s early history and their original charter, in addition to entries from each of the meetings. From meeting number 581 onward, the minutes and many committee reports are incorporated into the TOC Newsletter. Executive records include past president’s files, correspondence, and executive council records. Administrative records include financial documents and records on T.O.C. as a corporate entity and the achievement of charitable status in 2004. Committee records include records from the different committees functioning within the T.O.C. including the Bird Records Committee, Conservation Committee, Archives Committee, and Publications Committee. Membership records include membership lists and earlier meeting announcements.

The T.O.C.’s bird sightings records comprise various types of records dealing with the club members’ bird sightings as part of various events and outings. They mostly consist of members’ monthly reports. The Papers series contains the papers that were presented at T.O.C. meetings between 1934 and 1980 along with lists and catalogues of the papers. T.O.C. Publications contains various material produced by the T.O.C. including printed copies of Toronto Birds and the TOC Newsletters to 2007. Finally, the graphic materials include several photograph albums and one album of slides, as well as many loose photographs (both colour and black and white prints) and slides from members of the T.O.C. In addition there is an art print by John Crosby called Great Auk from 1992.
