The collection consists of records of various private businesses which operated in Hastings County, Ontario, which were gathered as a unit by the Hastings County Historical Society. Various kinds of activities and occupations are represented: collection of duties; public utilities; loan; general merchants; grocery; temperance; insurance; engineering; surveying; railway. Most of the individuals and some of the corporate bodies responsible for the creation of papers included in this fonds operated at a local or regional level, while most of the corporate bodies were subordinate to larger entities; most of these individuals and corporate bodies were located in Belleville. The fonds is comprised of business correspondence, registers of various kinds, cash books, ledgers, account books, journals, day books, and accounts receivable books.

  • one file of correspondence including a press release, a ballot for the election for the 1968 election
  • one file containing two newsletters from 1956 and the last page of another newsletter from 1958.

  • one file has annual reports from 1922, 1954, 1955, and 1956 in it, and a better service survey from 1953. * one file contains three guides about Belleville from 1950, three information guides for visitors to Belleville from 1961.

  • two files containing “The Highlands of Hastings” travel brochures from 1940 to 1967, and a Quinte Isle tourist directory.
  • one file containing files from the “Jaycees,” also known as the Belleville Junior Chamber of Commerce.
  • one file of material from the Belleville Board of Trade for Hastings County period in the organizations history.
  • one file containing ephemera pieces including a sign indicating membership and a menu.

Miles family fonds
Fonds · 1916-2012

The fonds consists of 48 letters written during World War I, transcriptions of the letters, 1 cd and a book titled “Just a Few Lines: A Memoir of William Thomas Miles from the Great War, 1916-1919.” The book is written by Thomas N. Miles and William J. Miles, Will Miles' sons and is based on the collection of letters in this fonds. 47 of the letters are from Will Miles to his mother and 1 is from his cousin Maud to Will Miles. The letters are written between Sept. 30, 1916 and Feb. 18, 1919. Most of the letters are sent from France with a few of them sent from England, Barriefield Camp and Bramshott Camp. The letters discuss Will Miles' day to day life being a soldier during WWI, Flanders mud, lice, hunger and poison gas, meeting girls, complaining of the the food he eats, people being injured or sick, himself being injured, the weather, thanks for recieving parcels, running into old friends and looking forward to coming home in 1918.

Pitman family fonds

The fonds consists of two books plus banking records and statements, invoices, a postcard, phone bills and two flyers. Book 1 is an account ledger with name index spanning from 1932-1940. Book 2 is a notebook from 19 March 1940- 18 Sept. 1944. Other records include a statement from Sept. 21, 1936 plus 10 pages from an accounts ledger, no date, possibly recording household goods sold from the Pitman's store; two Canadian Bank of Commerce vinyl folders; seven “Long Distance Service” phone bill statements; two receipts; four loose pages from a petty accounts book; two envelopes; card from “Tuck” to Mrs. J. Churchill, no date; two flyers, one from “Charlinore Kennels” and one from “Director of Annuities”.

Canadian Red Cross fonds
Fonds · 1895-1960

Fonds consists of records pertaining to the Canadian Red Cross including documents surrounding the development of a Canadian Branch of the British Red Cross Society with advice from the American Red Cross Society. One series contains letters that were addressed to Colonel W.N. Ponton, mainly from the National Society for Aid and Sick to the Wounded in War (later the British Red Cross), 1895-1934. Another file contains letters to Miss E. C. Gordon as she attempted to develop an independent Canadian Red Cross, including those from the American National Red Cross signed by Clara Barton. The final folder contains a series of ephemera pieces issued by the organization throughout its history as well as two stamps promoting Canadian War Bonds.

One records the names and dates of death of Women's Institute members of the branches at: Roslin, Plainfield, Phillipston (Bethel) Zion, Quinte, Carmel, Cannifton, Melrose, Foxboro, Tyendinaga East, Moira, Chapman's, Parkdale, Lonsdale and Marlbank (1925-2013). The other is a scrapbook with photographs and brief biographies of men who had enlisted for the Second World War in the areas covered by the Women's Institute branches of: Melrose, Phillipston (Bethel) Zion, Plainfield, Quinte, Roslin and Tyendinaga East (May 1944).

This collection comprises documents received in response to an Access to Information request addressed to Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) by the Corporation of the Town of Deseronto, Ontario, in 2008. The request asked for copies of documentation submitted as part of the Culbertson Tract land claim of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and upon which the decision to allow the claim had been based.

The documents in this collection are all photocopies of materials located in public archives in Canada. The materials range in date from 1779 to 1959 and record the interactions between the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and the British and Canadian governments, in relation to lands, from the time of their departure from the Mohawk Valley to the mid-twentieth century.

A. Mclean Haig fonds

This fonds contains 22 folders. It consists of A. McLean Haig's biographical data which includes a brief summary of his life. The second folder contains his incoming correspondence which includes letters from: Assistant Deputy Minister of national Defence James A. Sharpe; a copy of a letter forwarded to Haig from C.C. Wimperly of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs to Mr. A.B. Sprague; two letters between Wimperly and Haig, one with statistics concerning Northumberland and Durham Counties, the communities of Campbellford and Seymour, and the former District of Newcastle; one from A.R. Wilson, the Belleville Superintendent of the Canadian National Railway; one telegram and one business card congratulating Mayor Haig on his election in 1962 from Quebec Premiere Jean Lesage – in the telegram, it is interesting to note that Lesage is spelled Lesarge; a letter from Trans-Canada Air Lines and Air Canada Vice President Howard Cotterell with a small picture sent from Cotterell to Haig from the air carrier's annual report; a letter from CNR Rideau Manager Keith Hunt that had a piece of the rail-track from Pinnacle Street in Belleville enclosed with it after the line had been pulled from the ground in 1964; and three Christmas cards received from constituents.

The are also pieces of Haig's outgoing correspondence including: four pieces of correspondence to CNR the St. Lawrence Region Vice President, W.H. Kyle and Belleville Superintendent A.R. Wilson respectively; and a letter thanking Premiere Lesage – again spelled Lesarge, for his congratulations on winning the 1962 Belleville municipal election.

There is a folder of his municipal papers consisting of: newspaper clippings; a press release from Postmaster M.A. Murray; a program from the opening of the new wing of the Belleville General Hospital in 1956; and a report on major accomplishments achieved by the Haig administration between 1960 and 1963 prepared by City Manager J.R. Reynolds. Additional folders in this fonds include: one folder of federal government papers, nine folders containing copies of his addresses and speeches; one folder of speeches given by other people that the Mayor kept; a folder with copies of the report of the Willmott Royal Commission which looked into the McFarlands hockey team scandal; one folder of military related documents; one folder with items pertaining to the history of Belleville and Thurlow; a file with printed jokes and other items that Haig found humourous; one folder labeled miscellaneous by the original record keeper; and two volumes of scrapbooks.

Bogart family fonds

This fonds contains eleven folders. The first folder consists of genealogy records, family records and ephemera. This folder contains: a list of the births and deaths of members of the Bickford family from 1795 to 1877; three lists regarding deaths of Bogart family members David D. and Emma Virginia; the marriage certificate of David D. Bogart and Harriet Bickford from 1845 in Oswego, New York; hair samples of David D. Bogart, Harriet A. Bogart, and Emma V. Bogart; Harriet Bogart's account book with the Bank of Montreal; religious ephemera; and one unattributable piece of paper.

The second folder contains correspondence from 1868 to 1898. The addressed parties in these letters are: David D. Bogart, Harriet A. Bogart, W.D. Smith, J. Bickford, M.W. Forward, A.J. [Northrupe], John Bell, A.L. Bogart, Alexander Robertson, C.W. Bell, Alexander Robinson, [M.D.] Smith, E. Guss Porter, R. Richardson, W.R. Richardson, [G.] Mollison, and Y.B. Couch.

The third folder contains property records. It consists of: of a mortgage with dower and power of sale between John Canniff Phillips and Albert L. Smith; an indenture of bargain and sale between John Canniff Phillips and Anna Cornelia Phillips; a deed of land between Hester Morden and D.D. Bogart; a deed from the Oswego Rural Cemetery Association to Warren D. Smith and Harriet A. Bogart; six copies of the notice of exercising the power of sale between Harriet Bogart and William Henry Melburn; the original and a copy of a re-mortgage between [W.H.] Melburn and [Nancy] Garrison; a bill of costs for the power of sale from Harriet Bogart to Sexsmith; and a slip indicating a mortgage between Harriet Bogart and Wallace.

The fourth folder contains insurance information. Included in this folder are receipts and policies between Harriet Bogart and the Royal Insurance Company, a receipt from The Liverpool & London & Globe Insurance Company to Harriet Bogart after a sum was payed by J. Wallace, and a slip indicating that a new roof was put on a property that Harriet Bogart owned from T.C. Lazier to the Royal Insurance Company.

Following this, folder five contains legal papers and records relating to various estates. It includes: a description of the results and potential penalties from an unknown case from 1876; a receipt issued from J.H. Mitchell indicating that an account had been settled after the death of D.D. Bogart in 1878; a receipt from the Riverside Cemetery in New York from Edwin Bell; a receipt from a settled account after the purchase of a monument and a headstone at Riverside Cemetery, Oswego, New York; the estate of the William [Winsby]; two receipts from the Oswego Rural Cemetery Association indicating that an account had been paid regarding the upkeep and maintenance of the Bogart and Smith burials; and a bill of costs relating to the estate of Harriet A. Bogart.

The sixth folder contains Bogart family stock information. It includes information relating to D.D. Bogart's stock holdings with the Grand Junction Railroad. Folders seven, eight, and nine contain numerous receipts from merchants and vendors including those in Belleville, Oswego, New York, and elsewhere.

The tenth folder contains papers relating to an 1874 Sheriff's sale of D.D. Bogart's goods. The twelfth folder contains two copies of an article from the Thursday, January 13 edition of the Daily Intelligencer recounting the experiences of A.L. Bogart in the city of Belleville. The folder also contains two copies of an article written by Billa Flint to the Daily Intelligencer disputing the claims of Bogart on January 17, 1881.
