O.A. Cooke collection

Collection consists of material used by Owen A. Cooke and Norman Hillmer in the preparation of biographies for the Dictionary of Canadian Biography (DCB). Includes research and working papers, correspondence with representatives from the DCB, bibliographies of sources and copies of final versions of the biographies. Some copies of the biographies have been translated into French. Also includes an incomplete interview with Major D.A. McAlpine and Colonel Dan Gordon Loomis conducted by Owen Cooke in 1973. Includes their views of Canada's involvement with the International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS) in Vietnam. Fonds is comprised of the following 9 folders:

Norman Hillmer fonds

Fonds consists of research work done by Norman Hillmer entitled "Bibliography of Sources relating to a History of the Royal Canadian Air Force at Home 1919-1945". Also includes information on the production of the book "History of the Canadian Forces Weather Services", including correspondence between Hillmer and researching and writing contractors, several drafts of the text with edits and contracts created for the contracting of the text.

Fonds consists of the preliminary work for The Creation of a National Air Force written by W.A.B. Douglas. The preliminary work was carried out by many historians beginning in the 1970s, and includes material on the Royal Canadian Air Force (personnel, history, operations, rearmament, interviews with retired Air-Marshals and Air Vice-Marshals, etc.), coastal commands, command and control of naval and air A/S forces in the Northwest Atlantic, Canadian Air Policy 1923-1939, the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (origins, aircrew selection, impact on Western Canada, etc.), and the Atlantic Ferry Organization and Ferry Command. Also included are maps, graphs, photographs, narratives, draft chapters, photocopies of prints, and 3 floppy diskettes. There are 6 series:
