It contains a paper on arms control on the Great Lakes, a list of vessels employed on the British naval service on the Great Lakes during 1755-1875, articles on navigation on the Great Lakes, an account of the naval action fought in Lake Erie on 10 September 1813, and notes on gunboats, steamers and canoes. Includes articles on canals and waterways of Canada, prints of W. H. Bartlett showing waterfront scenes of Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Cobourg, Kingston, Port Hope, Quebec and Brockville, and a booklet on Meaford, Georgian Bay, Ontario. Subseries consists of name files for each Canadian naval vessel (H.M.C.S.) or government vessel (C.G.S.) from 1910 when the Canadian Navy was established under the Naval Service Act. The files contain general notes, photographs, a brief history, reports of proceedings, newspaper and magazine clippings, signals and messages. Some files are incomplete as some of the reports of proceedings are missing. Also includes "The Navy Goes North" on DVD by the National Film Board of Canada about HMCS Labrador. The DVD has been withdrawn from circulation but a copy may be obtained from Library and Archives Canada.

Subseries consists of name files for British and foreign ships, many of which have a connection with the RCN. Foreign ships includes Australian, French, German Italian, Japanese and American. These files for British ships contain general notes, photographs, a history of the name, Admiralty Damage Control summaries, newspaper and magazine clippings, signals and messages. The files for foreign ships do not contain a great deal of information. Also includes general reference files divided mainly by the ship type, including aircraft carriers, auxiliary vessels, corvettes, destroyers, frigates, minesweepers, motor launches, sailing vessels, submarines, trawlers and drifters. These files contain narratives, signals and messages, newspaper and magazine clippings, press releases and historical data. The subseries is divided into the following parts:

Subseries consists of material dealing with the history of the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve (RCNR) and the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR) from the 1923 until the mid-1960s. The files contain narratives, signals and messages, newspaper and magazine clippings, press releases, reports of proceedings, a listing of Commanding Officers and historical data.

Subseries consists of historical files for the various commands on both the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts. Subseries consists of alphabetical lists of HMC local craft during the Second World War. Lists includes: patrol vessels; patrol boats; patrol craft; examination vessels; boom attendant vessels; boom maintenance vessels; loop laying vessels; gate vessels; depot ships; tugs; diving boats; harbour craft; and various other kinds of vessels.

Subseries consists of photographs of several of the craft, inspection questionnaires, fact sheets with the vessels specifics, surveys of the local craft on the West Coast, correspondence regarding purchasing, registering and requesting service from the craft, naval messages and memoranda during the Second World War.

Sub-series consists of files on Canada and the United States’ joint efforts to develop security plans and warning systems to defend North America against enemy threats. Files consist mainly of reports, charts and draft agreements which assess the threat and discuss ways in which Canada and the United States could collaborate to protect North America, including the development of a Distant Early Warning line, shared occupancy of key geographic locations, and security plans.

Sub-series consists of files pertaining to NATO air defence in Europe, and its efforts to integrate defence control of all member countries to enhance security and military capabilities. Topics include the development of the Supreme Headquarters of Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Air Defence Technical Centre, as well as the development of an early warning system for allied command in Europe. Also discusses the rules of engagement for unidentified aircraft, defence against very low-flying aircraft, and long-term requirements for air defence.

Sub-series consists of documents that discuss plans for the 1st Canadian Infantry Division in the event of war or heightened political tensions. Topics include equipment and personnel reserves in Europe, estimated personnel wastage rates, and the logistics required to move the balance of the 1st Canadian Infantry Division to Europe. Also discusses the estimated costs associated with these plans. Includes charts, reports, case studies, memoranda, correspondence and draft copies of new or amended policies.

Sub-series consists of various files related to mobilization planning. Includes directorate notes and instructions on how to fill out a war diary, but is comprised mainly of anti-aircraft defence plans and coastal defence plans involving the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), as well as plans for the Mobile Striking Force. Anti-aircraft defence plans include documents on the development of a programme for operational sites, notes on establishing NIKE bases for air defence, minutes and memoranda from meetings held between Canada and the USA, and reports that estimate Soviet long-range Air Force capability.
