CAVM Photograph Collection
Collection · Reproduced 1960-2001 (originally created ca. 1908-1989)

The CAVM Photograph Collection was gathered by the National Aviation Museum over time in order to preserve a visual record of aviation in Canada. The Museum used these photographs in exhibits, for historical reference, for reference in constructing models, and for restoration projects. Some original photographs (prints or negatives) were added to the Museum’s permanent collection, but selections were also made from photograph albums, scrapbooks, and prints, that were then copied and returned. Contributors may have been the original photographers, sharing or donating their own work, or aviation enthusiasts or historians that had copied photographs from other collections. Many small groups of photographs were donated by individuals and families with connections to aviation. The Museum created preservation copy negatives of the selected photographs, giving each copy negative a sequential number. The Collection is arranged in three series: CAVM-1 Negatives, CAVM-2 Prints, and CAVM-3 Card catalogue. The card catalogue was created to facilitate access to the Collection. Each card has information on the photograph with a small print glued to the card as a visual reference. The catalogue has five Photographic Print (PP) sub-series: PP01 General Aircraft by Manufacturer; PP02 National Aviation Museum Collection (historical photographs of Museum aircraft or conservation photographs taken by Museum staff); PP03 People, Organizations, Events, Gliders/Blimps, Airports/Air Fields; PP04 Hawker Siddeley Canada; and PP05 Miscellaneous (Museum displays, events, public relations, staff, site, models and engines).

HS-2L Drawing Collection
CA ON00420 HDC · Collection · Reproduced ca. 1970 (originally created 1917-1918)

Collection consists of reproduced technical drawings of the Curtiss HS-2L flying boat. The original drawings were made by Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Corporation, Standard Aircraft Corporation, or Gallaudet Aircraft Corporation between 1917 and 1918. It is unclear when the reproductions were made, but assumed to have been ca. 1970 when the Museum was working on its reproduction of the aircraft. The drawings all have numbers and, as with most engineering drawings, this designation may have had a repeating logical pattern based on the subject’s relation to other parts of the aircraft or other drawings. For example, cockpit flooring drawings have similar numbers with only the third digit changing (i.e. 313263 Post Pilot’s Cockpit Flooring No.17 Right, 314263 Post Pilot’s Cockpit Flooring No.17 Left, 315263 Post Pilot’s Cockpit Flooring No.19 Right etc.). The drawings have been arranged sequentially by these numbers.

Untitled
CA ON00420 RHB · Discrete Item · 1935-11-07

The item is a report in the form of a scrapbook where narrative reporting has been typed directly on the page and maps and photographs have been glued to the pages. A Senior Air Officer requested Beard to write this report on his voyage on the Hudson Bay Company ship Nascopie in July 1935. In his introduction, Beard wrote “My opinions are naturally of limited value, as no opportunity presented itself for me to have actual flying experience…. I have therefore endeavoured to view matters as if I was to be a passenger in an aircraft, contemplating a flight to the areas mentioned, and that the pilot was dependent on me for advice as to details, or contingencies likely to be experienced.” Among the photographs, at least 6 are aerial photographs – the remaining photographs appear to have been taken during Beard’s voyage on the Nascopie. Most maps are hand traced in black ink with colour highlights. Photograph captions and the cover title are also handwritten in black ink.
