Series consists of administrative and reference files and covers a wide variety of subjects. Some of the major subjects include: deployment, finance, news media, nominal rolls, personnel, visits and water. Those files with no title were placed in a group under “Reference Files”. The files are arranged into the following groups in alphabetical order:

   The remaining files that were not part of any of the above groups are grouped under “Other Files” and are filed at the end of the series in alphabetical order by file title.

Fonds consists of records created and maintained by the Land Forces Command Board of Inquiry investigating the Command, Control and Leadership of CANBAT 2. The records include a copy of the final report of the Board and documentation created and maintained by the Board in the conduct of its investigation, reporting and follow-up. There are 4 series:

Series consists of documents regarding the report of the Board of Inquiry into Command, Control and Leadership of CANBAT 2. Includes the following four parts:
Part I – The Board Report 15 Nov 96;
Part II – Annexes to the Board Report (Volumes 1-9);
Part III – Records of Testimony held at NDHQ (Volumes 1-27) and Condensed Transcripts and Concordance (Volumes 1-27); and
Part IV – Exhibits of the Board Report (Volumes 1-4).

Part III Records of Testimony includes the names of the witnesses. There are also video cassettes of most of the witnesses’ testimonies. Also includes copies of the following reports:
“Thomas Report – Investigation of Delay in Investigating the Allegations of Misconduct/Poor Performance of Canadian Forces Members at the Bakovici Hospital, Bosnia-Herzegovina” prepared by Lowell E. Thomas;
“Report of the Reviewing Team: Board of Inquiry – Command, Control and Leadership in CANBAT”, and
Reports and synopses regarding the Special Career Review Board’s examination of documentation and formulating recommendations.

Fonds consists of coloured photographs of organization charts which identify Generals, Brigadier-Generals and Lieutenant-Generals within the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The organization charts contain small photographs of each individual.

Series consists of various administrative documents pertaining to the CIOR and CIOMR 1990 summer congress in Calgary, Alberta. Includes committee correspondence and memoranda, organization charts, distribution lists, minutes of meetings, financial reports, personnel biographies, lists of attendance, copies of the registration package, official handbooks, audiovisual proposals, photographs, maps, communications reports and official handbooks. The material is arranged in the original order received.

Fonds consists of the office papers of Lt-Gen J.E. Vance used in the preparation and implementation of the 1987 White Paper. There are documents regarding a review of Canada’s defence policy, the White Paper process and implementation, the implementation of the new defence policy and the documentation of the White Paper. Includes a wide variety of documents, including memoranda, notes, correspondence, briefings, drafts, working papers, essays and minutes to meetings. There is a very detailed inventory of the contents for each of the fourteen folders at the beginning of the fonds and at the beginning of each folder.

The series consists of a set of documents charting the evolution of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). It covers the period of approximately five years (1914-1919), thereby encompassing the First World War. The series includes such information on the role played by Canadian forces in the events of Vimy and the occupation of the head bridge of the Rhine; statistics concerning the war efforts and a list of the regiments who have not served in Europe during the war. The series also includes extracts from Sir Douglas Haig’s war diary.

The series included information on the evolution of tradition in several European armies (German, Belgian, Danish, Spanish, French, Dutch and British) and Canada, among the 17th century and the 1970s in the legal field, hospital, and relations between civilian and military role, organization, recruitment and the ranks within these institutions. Documents related to the Canadian Armed Forces focus on conscription and the role of these on the Canadian military identity.

The series consists of documents on the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. It contains biographical and gives information on the Battle of Vimy. Also includes advertising made by French-Canadian units in newspapers to encourage voluntary enlistment

The series consists of Academic work written by Mr. Gagnon between 1969 and 1971. These documents are all written in French. The subject is the historiography and its problems, from a social history perspective by putting forward topics like nationalism and insurgencies. Also includes corrections notes.

Fonds consists of documents relating to the Second Independent Review of the National Defence Act by Chief Justice Lesage in 2011. Includes submissions with supporting documents by various bodies within the Dept. of National Defence and working/reference documents related to the review. There are 2 series:

Series consists of submissions and supporting documents by the following bodies in the Dept. of National Defence to Second Independent Review of the National Defence Act:

Series consists of files compiled by Barbara Dundas regarding: combat motivation; the Governor General; the publication plan for the Directorate of History and Heritage; and unit cohesion. Includes papers, photocopies of articles, faxes, notes, newspaper clippings, memoranda and other documents. In regards the the publication plan, the series includes drafts of the plan, draft outlines, promotion plan, marketing study and various other documents. The series is arranged in alphabetical order by file title.

Subseries consists of various drafts of Robert Caldwell’s work for chapter 7, “The Canadian Navy, Interoperability and U.S. Navy-Led Operations in the Gulf Region from the First Gulf War to 2003” in You Cannot Surge Trust – Combined Naval Operations of the Royal Australian Navy, Canadian Navy, Royal Navy and United States Navy 1991-2003. Includes drafts, draft scripts, working copies and master copies. Most drafts include comments and corrections by other Historians. Also includes a final report, a rough outline with Caldwell’s chapter and a text copy of Caldwell’s chapter. The subseries is arranged in chronological order.

Subseries consists of research material supporting Robert Caldwell work for chapter 7, “The Canadian Navy, Interoperability and U.S. Navy-Led Operations in the Gulf Region from the First Gulf War to 2003” in You Cannot Surge Trust – Combined Naval Operations of the Royal Australian Navy, Canadian Navy, Royal Navy and United States Navy 1991-2003. Includes annual historical reports, extracts from monographs, and articles and papers covering a wide variety of military and naval subjects. The files are arranged in alphabetical order by file title. There is also a list of article and papers arranged in the finding aid in alphabetical order by author’s personal / corporate name.

Series consists of material regarding submission of Robert Caldwell to the Library and Archives Canada Historical Research Promotion Committee to the Interdepartmental Committee for promotion to the level of HR (Historical Researcher) 4. Includes early drafts, email, correspondence and Caldwell’s summary resume. Also includes supporting documents consisting of his published work, including his work on the Royal Canadian Navy official histories, his work outside the Dept. of National Defence, samples of operational duty work and articles. There is also other documents regarding Caldwell’s salary and promotion to HR-4, as well as a file regarding his promotion to HR 3. The series is arranged in chronological order.

Subseries consists of files regarding Operation Medusa. Includes three files regarding the Royal Canadian Regiment containing a 2006 night order book and the experiences of B Company in the Operation. Also includes two powerpoint presentations regarding Kandahar, Afghanistan and the Operation. There are also files regarding Operation Archer, a visit by Lt-Gen Gauthier to the Directorate of History and Heritage in 2010, the Medusa controversy and battle procedures. The series is arranged in alphabetical oder by file title.

Subseries consists of transcripts of interviews with the following people:
