Fonds contain material relating to operational military research from the second half of the 20th century. The documents are multi-disciplinary in nature, providing scientific, mathematical and historical perspectives of the same topic. Many documents originally come from the Public Records Office UK (PRO), now known as The National Archives (TNA). In such cases, original archival references will be provided, and potential researchers are encouraged to cite these whenever possible. Shephard, Ronnie W.Report on the effectiveness of V1 flying bombs and V2 rocket bombs. Content includes three methods on how to record data from damage reports and analyse it to determine the effectiveness of V weapons at destroying targets. Includes tables, figures and photographs. Authored by C. G. Lyons, P. Cardiner.
A report comparing the two different methods of examining bomb damage to buildings. The average circle method and the vulnerable area method are different in how they measure the radii so damage caused by explosives. Includes figures, tables and calculations.
Extensive report on assessing weapons effectiveness, target vulnerability and force requirements. Includes ways of analyzing quantitative data to determine the mean area of effectiveness (M.A.E) of different yields and types of bombs at destroying targets. Plus appendices, calculations, diagrams, tables and references.
Brief on the different types of damage on machines from aerial bombing, how it affects their functions and how quickly they can be fixed in the British experience. Includes "Heavily damaged machines" , "slightly damaged machines" , "Damage to machine shops"
An appendix presenting data on the effectiveness of aerial bombing on different industrial targets including factories and machine shops. Includes reports from aerial bombing on targets in France, Friedrichshafen, Brunswick, Bocholt, Hamburg, Bremen and Bremerhafen. The reports list date of attack, weapons used and the damage sustained plus tables.
Appendix compiling data on the secondary blast casualties of atomic weapons and other high explosive weapons including V1 flying bombs. Data was gathered by British doctors present in Nagasaki and from the United Kingdom. Secondary blast injuries include epilation, radiation sickness, flash burns, flame burns and debris casualties. Data obtained is also used to analyse which British air raid shelters are the best. Includes tables, figures and graphs.
Note no. ARP.101/NJHS. Report for the Ministry of Home Security. Summary of controlled explosions of bombs below ground to test the ground shock caused and its effect.
Note no. ARP.90/RJ. Report for the Ministry of Home Security. Summary of a series of scaled tests to study the penetration of blast waves into shelters with various forms of entrance. Shelters were built in accordance with Type A of the handbook "Directions for the erection of domestic surface shelters". Includes tables and diagrams.
Extensive field survey of casualties sustained from air-raids in the United Kingdom. Includes reports on primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary injuries. Content includes "Number of incidents studied; location, age and sex of people exposed to risk" , "Casualty risks from bombs of different sizes and comparisons of relative danger in the open, in buildings and in shelters" , "Injuries which occur under characteristic conditions of exposure" , "Analysis of special injuries occurring in H.E. incidents" plus figures, tables and appendices. Authored by S. Zuckerman.
Report on the aerial bombing of the city of Hull (officially named Kingston upon Hull) on July 18th, 1941. Report includes a descriptions of the attack, the work of rescue squads, the state of defenses, attempts at evacuation, the handling of fatalities, the morale of the populace and the speeding of rumours.
Brief on the bombing of a densely populated part of Hendon on the night of February 13th, 1941. Reports the types of bombs dropped and the casualties sustained.
Bulletin B.16. Report for the Ministry of Home Security - Research and Experiments Department. Extensive study on air-raids in England and the casualties they cause. Contents include "Methods used in the field survey of air-raid casualties" , "General circumstances in which casualties occur in air-raids" , "Differences between the casualty effects of day and night raids" , "Casualties in the open" , "Casualties in dwelling-houses" , "Casualties in shelters" , "Casualties directly exposed to explosions in confined space" , "Incidents associated with large numbers of casualties" , "Place of treatment of casualties" , "Special types of injury" plus tables and figures.
Report on a series to bombing tests against "bomb-resistant" targets at Ashley Walk to test their strength and resistance to bombing. A series of British and Germans bombs were either dropped from the air or place strategically to test the damage and penetration they inflicted to the fortification. Includes tables, figures, diagrams, photographs and references.
Report on the testing of a reinforced brick shelter and a reinforced concrete shelter to test their structural stability when a 250 kg. German bomb is detonated nearby. Includes tables, figures, appendix and photographs.
A collection of photographs of damaged structures due to aerial bombing. Photographs include "Photographs of the effects of 2,500 kg. H.E Bomb" , "Photographs of the effects of a parachute mine on brick surface shelters" , "Photographs of the effects of 50 K.G. (Firepot).
