This series contains records about the St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Chatham, Ontario and the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association. The material is concerned with the daily life of student nurses, their involvement with St. Joseph’s Hospital, and the activities of the Alumnae Association.

The Alumnae Association was formed to promote the interests of the hospital and school and maintain connections between the graduates. Since the school closed, the Alumnae Association has also been dedicated to preserving the history of the school and its graduates. The majority of the records in this series were collected by Marion Campbell who was a very active member of the Alumnae Association.

Some of the materials are items which the student nurses used. There is the 1957 constitution, bylaws, rules, and moral code of the medical staff of the hospital. There is also a student’s prayer manual and an information booklet welcoming student nurses to the nursing school. The booklet outlines the school’s objectives, instruction, admission requirements, scholarships, services, student activities, and the Alumnae Association.

There is correspondence between Marion Campbell and the Sisters of St. Joseph of London concerning her research into the administrators and directors of nursing at the hospital. Included is a list of administrators from 1890 to 1984 and a list of directors of the School of Nursing from 1895 to 1970. There are also news clippings about the School of Nursing, the student nurses, alumnae, and St. Joseph’s Hospital.

From the Alumnae Association, there are pamphlets, correspondence, promotional material, lists of graduates, lists of alumnae, and newsletters. The material is primarily concerned with reunion events hosted by the association. There is also a 1965 annual report and the treasurer’s cash book which tracks the association’s finances.

There are a variety of photographs. This includes photographs of Sisters, nurses, graduations, hospital and nursing school buildings, alumnae, and alumnae events. There are two alumnae photograph albums with photographs of the graduating classes from 1938 to 1970. There is also a scrapbook with photographs and ephemera of student nurses and alumnae events.
