The majority of this sous-fonds includes field notes from his time as a surveyor, and ledgers from his work on the Rebellion Losses Claims Commission.

The records of most of the family members are intermingled, possibly a reflection of how Agnes Sands Mern kept them. Also included are the records of Agnes Effie Sands Mern (which make up the majority of the fonds) including her correspondence, financial records (including the records of the Wawanosh Post convenience store), records relating to her musical and artistic interest and records relating to her work in the Church and her activities organizing cultural events and concerts. Also included are the records of Agnes' husband John Phillips Mern such as his correspondence, financial records, notebooks and personal records relating to his son John P. Mern Jr.

The fonds consists of materials related to the personal and business activities of William Porte. Included are diaries, ledgers, and albums and scrapbooks of newspaper clippings. Some material from two of his children (Fred W. and Ida Kate Porte) is included. William Porte’s papers provide an excellent snapshot in the life of a growing Ontario town in the late 19th century. In recent years, Porte's personal papers have been studied and cited extensively, most notably by those researching the infamous February 4, 1880 murder of the Donnelly family. Collection consists of captioned photographs contributed by Alan Noon to the Western News in a weekly photofeature entitled "The Way We Were". This feature ran from 2001 to 2012. Photographs were originally taken by London Free Press , Western News photographers, Al Noon or photos within Western Archives holdings and other privately held photographs. Noon researched and wrote each caption; these are found in the scope and content notes for each photograph.

This artificial collection contains more than 6,000 images, mainly of London Ontario and southwestern Ontario region. Subjects include: buildings and streetscapes, civic events, exhibitions and royal visits, farm scenes, industrial scenes and railways, natural and other disasters, individuals (officials, academics etc.), groups (workers, school children, etc.), recreational scenes and sporting events. The images were largely removed from their original context in family or other fonds for ease of item level description.
