A. Burke Doran collection

Collection consists of records acquired by A. Burke Doran. The collection contains four pages removed from the guest book of the Black Bay Duck Club, a hunting club located near Ottawa. The pages were used as exhibits in the 1946 hearings of the Royal Commission to Investigate the Facts Relating to and the Circumstances Surrounding the Communication, by Public Officials and Other Persons in Positions of Trust of Secret and Confidential Information to Agents of a Foreign Power. The Royal Commission resulted from the 1945 defection of Igor Gouzenko, a cipher clerk for the military attache, Colonel Nikolai Zabotin, of the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa. The pages bear the signature of Zabotin and several other Soviet officials. Also included are correspondence between the legal branch of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Department of Justice, as well as J.J. Heeney, an original owner of the Black Bay Duck Club. The collection also contains two dictaphone wartime relocation certificates issued to the law firm of Lang & Michener, and three samples of law firm letterhead.

Records in the fonds predominately document work related to instituting pre-trial conferences and mediation programmes as an alternative court room. Fonds also documents Lieff's appointment to and retirement from the bench. Records include consultation papers, meeting minutes, correspondence, speeches, reports, memoranda, and newspaper clippings.

Fonds consists of photographs, letters, ephemera, a letters patent of knighthood and artifacts relating to the life of Sir Aemilius Irving. Included are an illuminated address and a wooden box presented to Irving by the benchers of the Law Society of Upper Canada on the occasion of his ninetieth birthday. An engraving of William Osgoode is also included.

These photographs are portraits of five lawyers: John Bell Holden, Sidney Hamlin Robinson, Percy Claire Finlay, James Young Murdoch, and William Smith Walton. Each was a member of the law firm Holden, Murdoch, Walton & Beatty in Toronto during the 1930s.

Fonds consists of records accumulated by Art Linton in his capacity as a director of Magna Carta Canada 2015, a touring exhibition of the Magna Carta in Canada that travelled to Winnipeg, Ottawa, Toronto and Edmonton in 2015. Records in the fonds are mostly memorabilia of this event, including posters and a commemorative pin, and related correspondence. Also included is a photograph of the Ontario Superior Court Judges' Association members in 2015, as well as items pertaining to Linton's attendance at a Magna Carta Foundation of Liberty Runnymede 800 event held in the United Kingdom in June 2015.
