Adam Shortt's involvement with Queen's University, his work as Chairman of the Civil Service Commission, his work as first Chairman of the Board of Historical Publications of the Public Archives, his active career as a public speaker, and his creative output are all reflected in the papers. There is also a large series of autographs that Shortt collected over the course of his life.

The correspondence files, arranged chronologically, contain memoranda of confidential interviews on Canadian politics, trade, the economy, external affairs, defence. Often these memoranda are in the form of letters or vice versa, so the two have been filed together. The Diaries written by Grant Dexter in 1938-39 while he was in England touch on many aspects of Canadian External Affairs.

The fonds consists of correspondence relating to Donald Cameron MacDonald's resignation from the leadership of the New Democratic Party in 1970, his resignation from the Legislature in 1982 and the Ontario New Democratic Party Hydro Task Force. The research notes, which were used for the preparation of his newspaper articles (1982-1987) contain material on many of the most important issues in Ontario politics during this period. The files on hydro illustrate the numerous problems (environmental, economic and technical) encountered by the province during the first half of the 1980's. The files of writings contain an extensive collection of his newspaper articles and book reviews written from 1977 to 1989. The fonds also includes an instructional video, produced by the [Ontario] Legislative Assembly Broadcast and Recording Service, and hosted by Donald C. MacDonald, entitled "The Ontario Elections Finances Act: An Introduction", (April 1987).
