Hans Sinn fonds

Ther have been two accruals. The first accrual consists of the administrative files of Hans Sinn and relates to his involvement in three separate projects devoted to nonviolent international peace initiatives. There is an unexplained gap of eight years, 1968 to 1976, in which there are no available records. The fonds is arranged into three series: Series I: Sanity: Peace Oriented News and Comment; Series II: Training Institute for Nonviolence, Grindstone Island; Series III: Grindstone Co-operative. The first series dates from 1965-1967 and includes correspondence, mailing lists and information sheets directly related to the activities of the newspaper, Sanity: Peace Oriented News and Comment. There are several published materials, including copies of Sanity, various international peace related publications and newspaper clippings specifically devoted to the topic of resistance to the United States draft for the Vietnam War. The second series includes reports, notes, training evaluations and correspondence produced in conjunction with the operation of the Training Institute for Nonviolence on Grindstone Island, from 1963-1968; included are photographs, news clippings and circulars. This series also contains the business correspondence of Murray Thomson, a Quaker, who was Peace Education Secretary for Canadian Friends Service Committee. The original filing system of the Training Institute for Nonviolence has been retained in this series. The third series includes the administrative records, financial statements and board meeting reports of the Grindstone Co-operative, dating from 1976 to 1983. As well, there is a proposal for a 1977-78 expansion project, complete with architectural drawings, some correspondence, and a copy of the published work, Making Waves: The Grindstone Story. The second accrual consists of published materials.

Alfred Goldsworthy Bailey

The collection consists of the typescript of Bailey’s first book of poetry, Songs of the Saguenay and Other Poems, and three other poems (“Autumn Night”, “Belle Isle”, and “Tadoussac without You”). With the exception of one leaf, all leaves are signed by Bailey. The typescripts are on the rectos of each leaf.

The album contains 191 photographs. Subjects of the photographs include training at the riding school in Ottawa, the troops en route on the Adriatic, and photographs of time spent at Shorncliffe and Crowborough. Some photographs were taken at the Perkins Bull Hospital for Convalescent Canadian Officers and the Shrewsbury Aerodrome AAP. There are also photographs of Ireland, particularly Cork-Killarney.

The fonds consists mostly of photographs from World War II, with subjects including Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill at the Casablanca Conference; the Allied bombing of the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino; troop trucks, mule trains, soldiers and civilians. There are also photographs of the U.S. capitol in 1954, photographs of the Sioux people, and personal photographs of family and friends. The textual records include correspondence, commendations, discharge papers, and certificates relating to Longini’s military career, as well as news clippings.

Charles W. Hall fonds

Fonds consists of Hall’s manuscript diary, 8 paginated, 4 looseleaf foolscap leaves in length. A typed transcript accompanies the journal. The first entry is dated 11 December 1861: “The following is the diary of our passage from Dublin, to Hamilton. C.W.” The last entry is dated 1 February [1862] upon arrival in Hamilton: “The town is very prettily situated on a Bay called ‘Burlington’, and is about 70 miles from the ‘Falls of Niagara’, and contains about 25,000 inhabitants. Thus ends my diary.”

James Henry Reid fonds

Fonds consists of an album containing 115 b&w photographs. There are photographs of the following: the H.M.S. Megantic; Reid in a graduation gown; soldiers in uniform, on board ship, in tents, and on horseback; medical and dental staff; views of buildings (King’s College, Cambridge, for example), and hospitals and clinics (London General Hospital and the Etchinghill Hospital, etc). Most of the photographs are unidentified. Approximately 30 photographs were taken between 1920 and 1925; they depict Reid, his family, and friends at Severn River and Wood’s Bay. He worked as a dentist in Toronto as late as 1925.
